Can you be a bit more specific with the question?

Building societies are by definition mutual and are owned by the people who have savings with them. Outfits like Portman, Leeds & Holbeck are mutuals.

Banks wise, there's been some consolidation recently:
  • Royal Bank of Scotland bought NatWest and so own Coutts as well. RBS have been very acquisitive internationally as well.
  • Lloyds bought TSB
  • Bank of Scotland and Halifax did a merger
  • Abbey look like they might be bought by Banco Santander
  • Barclays - not sure.
A quick look at any of theses banks' websites should give you a fuller story.

Ok as an example do HSBC own Yorkshire Bank, is Abbey Nat owned by Barclays. I only need a brief run down to get him started then he's on his own. Nothing too technical as hes only young

The Woolwich is a part of Barclays, and C&G part of Lloyds TSB. Abbey is currenly independent but possibly going to Banco Santander (but it's not getting my vote).

RBS owns Natwest and Coutts
HBOS comprises Halifax & Bank of Scotland
HSBC also own Midland Bank and a few overseas banks
Standard Chartered doesn't own any other bank in the UK AFAIK
Northern Rock is demutualised and independently quoted on the stockmarket
Bradford & Bingley is demutualised and independently quoted on .........

HBoS was formed by the merger between Halifax and Bank of Scotland. Also under the umbrella is Birmingham Midshires, TMB (The Mortgage Business) and and half share in Sainsbury's financial arm.
There are various other life assurance companies etc in the mix also.

IIRC they are one of the largest banks in the world and there isnt really a Midland Bank anymore is there?

Amazes me how many people dont actually know what HSBC stands for.

The official line internally when they re-branded from Midland to HSBC was that it "doesn't stand for anything - HSBC is just own new name".

Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. hahahaha

Anyway, AFAIK HSBC was actually started in HK by some Scots, so although it was nominally "a foreign bank" it's not really.

BTW< I always thought Ulster Bank was owned by NatWest, and thus RBS now?
