Kids pocket money - what's the going rate?
What's the going rate for weekly pocket money for a 10 (nearing 11) year old boy and an 8 year old girl? We've got it at £4.50 for the little fella and £3.50 for the girl. Wondering what you parents give to yours?
Ours aren't complaining (they get spoiled rotten) but I was wondering what the average going rate was...

I've got a six year old and I don't give him any. He does get a lot of other things though, and gets to go to places like bowling, swimming, cinema etc.

Depends what they are expected to buy with it really. Mine ate 6 & 7 and I give them £4 per week each. They then put half of that in their money boxes for things like birthday & Chrismas presents and the other half in their purse/wallet.
It still means that it takes something like 10 weeks to save for a new PlayStation game or toy which seems about right to me.

Ours at 10 and 13 have a tenner a week. It was a fiver a week until a couple of months ago, but they never seemed to have much purchasing power and were still tapping us for stuff all the time.
Playstation games are ludicrously expensive -- at least 30 quid a go. I think they ought to be able to buy something decent about once a month. If they go to the ice-cream man that's about a quid, so if they do it every day they end up with £3 a week. We give them the pocket money then don't give them anything else (well I don't -- I think the missus softens up )
OTOH the 10 year old now tells me he's going to save up for an IPod Mini. Like that's going to happen -- he's already spent the next two weeks' pocket money!

Some good feedback here folks, thanks ! My daughter loves to read and write (she's a sponge and we're feeding her thirst for knowledge !) and will gladly spend her money on a girlie thing here called "Diddl" - basically stationery, pens, pencils - sort of a Disney thing. The wee fella is Playstation (and footie) mad so we're trying to teach him the value of money by making him save for the games he wants - he's got some sort of financial brain as he's asking for credit It worked once but not the next time !

My eldest got £3.00 a week when she was 12 and got it increased to £5.00 a week when she turned 13. I also pay her phone credit to a maximum of £5.00 a month, anything over that she has to fund herself. Her pocket money is strictly on the proviso that she helps round the house : emptying dishwasher, helping with the youngest, bringing laundry in, etc. which she does. That way she can say she's earned it. Her mum and I have also reserved the right to dock whatever amount we see fit if she gets out of order or gobby (which they do at 13, believe me)

sons 13 nearly 14 gets a tenner a week. daughter age 10 gets £7. They have to do chores though. Sons a tight git n spends nothing but daughter blows it all on herself n mates. They do not earn that amount though in my opinion but i feel its good to give them some independance to try to teach them the value of money! Its a different world now-a-days cause i would have died for that kinda money without a part time job but times move on n as people have said games etc cost a lot - didnt have those sorta things in my day!
