I ended up fast forwarding in parts cos it was just too much.It would have been a much better film if they had toned it down some.
Apparently it sold 4.1 million copies on its first day of release in the US.

i liked the movie, it was good but totally different story from the islamic perspective about the killing of christ coz we believe God saved him before they could crucify him and also God made it appear to them they were killing him but God had already took him, good thing was they should jesus in a humans perspective, coz thats what he was a human and not a God but a servant of God and not begotten but a son as we all are , Gods creation.
i liked it , it was a good movie

I hated it! Saw it at the flicks so couldn't fast forward. Mel Gibson said in an interview 'it's the story of Easter, the greatest story ever told'. Well I think he missed the point, Easter is about the resurrection (2 mins in the film) not gratuitous torture (10 mins+ in the film?).
If you haven't seen it, don't bother!

I thought it was a very powerful film. Whether you believe in God/Jesus or not, the film is based upon the Roman historical records of what happened to him, so you have to have respect for the guy for putting up with that. People say it is gratutitous, but that is how the Romans treated people, it's no more gratutitous than the beginning of Saving Private Ryan, and everyone hailed that for showing the true suffering of the Normandy Landings.
If it had been me I would just have renounced whatever to get off!
Obviously the more religous aspects of the film have are played up somewhat, but that's hardly surprising considering the subject matter! There is some very powerful imagery in it too, but factually as a piece of historical drama I thought it was excellent.
Geezer

I watched it too on DVd via projector last night:
I found it tedious, very laboured and dull, fast forwarded it several times not because of squeamishness (I m a Dr.) but because 20 seconds of whipping with cat o nine tails or whatever they were doing at the time gets the point accross just as effectively as 20 minutes of it. Since there was no plot, and a story we all know backwards, a bit of sensible editing could have reduced it from 2 hours to 2 minutes without any loss of artistic or dramatic value. One could not develop any empathy with the Jesus character because the film was curiously devoid of emotional and characteriological development. The cinematograpy was uninspiring too. Poor shot composition, and endless resorting to slow motion to indicate particularly "dramatic" scenes. As if it needed to be any slower!
All in all a turkey, and merely serves to confirm my long held dislike of Mr. Gibson.
