Kelly Holmes
Mods - not sports related, so keep your mucky paws off
After watching my wife scream Kelly to the finish line this evening and the rest of the pub go ballistic, I started wondering - what is it that makes us so keen to jump about the place and scream "go on ya cert" etc etc etc, when a person who we have never met, are never likely to meet and have nothing in common with wins a race that we are never likely to compete in? Isn't it just the same as showing up at a random school sports day, choosing someone cos we like their trainers and 'supporting' them by going home and hoping they win?
The other funny thing is that the very same people in the very same pub celebrated mishter Beckam missing a penalty with similar amount of enthusiasm as the two golds this evening

If Kelly was French it is unlikely we would all have been cheering her - Its coz she's a Brit!
Ohhhhh and well done to the 4 lads in the relay too - Personally I dont know them either - but again they wore the GB uniform and beat the yanks - happy days
Put simply its national pride and a pleasant change from all the hype arrounf PR.

Its is also pure admiration for a representative of our country who has achieved an amazing and very rare double gold in the face of all the problems she has had over the years up to now.
I find it very strange that you can't understand that without having to have it spelt out for you.

Was discussing this last night with my wife and I said the two highlights of the Olympics had to be:
Kelly Holmes face when she won the 800m - a wonderful mixture of utter joy and complete disbelief!
Mens 4x100m - me shouting "bloody hell we're in the lead" when the last change over occurred and me and Lisa shouting the guy down the home straight!
Wonderful, just wonderful
