Thailand - Phuket Anyone been ?

Phuket is ok - we were there 18 months ago.
The centre is a bit grubby - lots of lady boys and prostitutes hanging around big sweaty Germans. If you stay in one of the better hotels on the outskirts it's very pleasant, however, and the fake watches are great (ours still working, anyway).
The real attraction of Phuket is the diving - that's why we were there. Phi Phi (where they filmed the beach) is worth a trip even if you don't dive as you can see turtles etc just snorkelling. Similan Islands are (or were) in the top ten dive sites in the world and were amazing (about 3 hours by fast catamaran).
Without the diving we agreed we'd have been disappointed. Depends what you want, of course. We combined with Bangkok (fabulous) and travelling in Northern Thailand which was also stunning.

seriously though the place we're staying looks pretty good so I'd imagine it'll be fine then
looking forward to doing some diving and we're also gonna spend couple nights in Bangkok so that should be good too

Make sure that you agree beforehand any price with a taxi/tuk tuk driver, they really hit hard if you wait untill end of journey to ask the price. The gold/gem scams are always to be avoided. Is the hotel in Patong or one of the other beaches?
