For those who know about French properties....

Is there something seriously wrong with this place to be only £180k???
Its a long way down into south west France but the renting possibilities of it look interesting, not just fishing but for watersports etc.
Looking at other places much closer to north France but unfortunately will be a very long time before I ever get to even try and realise such a dream, unless I win the lottery

LOL yeah sorry Puff my post misread to what I meant (edited accordingly) 800 acres might have been a buit too much to manage for me would be interesting trying to keep that weed free on your own
It seems a fairly large house for the money thats what I was thinking. You could rent it out as a holiday home for people to fish/do water sports from etc. Close to Limoges and not too far from Bordeaux so not exactly in the remotest part of France in terms of access etc.

Bravo. Playing Devil's Advocate I'd check what mortgage you could get on the property because if France is anything like the rest of Europe you may struggle to get more than a 70% mortgage, plus the banks may have a different view of it's market value - they often do.
You also need to check which airlines fly there (not Ryanair, they have a habit of pulling routes) for access from your potential letters and I'd also recommend you taking a holiday down there in order to check out the local market and whether it's a viable proposition or not.
Unfortunately, buying property abroad is not as straightforward as you'd like but provided you invest the time and effort in your search you can be well rewarded.
It sounds realistically priced to me.

Well it would be possible to rent it out to anglers for some summer French carp fishing (bigger and better than UK carp) thats if that lake actually has any in it lol. Plus it serves as a holiday home with the potentila to convert the barns as well.
This is just an example really and the only one I have looked at this morning. Want to look at some much further north which are easy to drive to.
Just was shocked at the price as where I live you can't even get a terraced 3 bed house for that but in France you can get a piece of tranquility like that

that because where yo live is not in the middle of nowhere!
i assume you have shops nearby? and dont need to wait 6 months for a tradesman?
Go to New york and try to buy 3 beds for £180k on Park Ave!
Park Ave = one end, French Barn in the woods = other end.....you house = in the middle!

No nothing wrong. A bit expensive even!
Property in France is dirt cheap. Especialy if you deal with the frogs direct and not english estate agent middle men.
However expect to pay around 11% of the house value in fees.
And don't forget that the French are very very heavily taxed. Especialy if you run a business. Then again it is a chilled lifestyle...pros and cons as ever.

Found out there are over 100 commercial English owned carp waters in France Competiton has now got to the stage where theft of fish and destruction of reputation and business are taking place More Brits abroad causing trouble Not surprising when the business is worth £500 a week per person with an average of 8 people per week thats booked up 12-18 months in advance.
There is also an English run carp water on a lake not too far from the one in the link above. Think the words boat and missed go quite well together in this scenario.
Better off just getting a holiday place and keeping it to family and friends and keep business out of it from what I have been reading on the web.

Looks about right to me. We have property south-west of Limoges, this is east. Ours is an old farmhouse that we are doing up for a holiday home and eventually to retire to France. We only have 2000 sq metres , two barns and a house.
It's not an ideal area to go to if you want to go clubbing, expect to eat at Michelin starred restaurants etc, but if you want fantastic scenery, decent weather, cheap little olde-worlde restaurants, (3 courses, wine and aperitifs for 3 people = €26),and easy to reach, (Ryanair to Limoges, or TGV to Poitiers/Angouleme from Lille), then look no further.
We love the area, and property is still affordable.
It's not THAT bad a drive, either, I do it in a Xantia in 8-9 hours from Calais, (without being stupid over speed limits )and about 11-12 hours with a large box trailer on the back.

LMAO can you get me a second one for even more than my first? Say over 250 years interest only? Even then I might be pushing the repayments
On a serious note though how do people go about buying a place if its multiple buyers? Everyones name is on the mortgage and you pay from one account that everyone pays into?
