This is what I use (the "as is" bit is important). I got the format off the Autotrader site.

Not really up to date with these matters but I've always put:
Sold <vehicle manufacturer> <model> registration <reg no> to <buyer's name> of <buyer's address> for <purchase price> on <date>.
Sold as seen.
Paid in full.
<Signed>
Actually, the last car I sold was to ProperCharlie on here. I'm pretty sure I put something like this on the receipt. It was a good car (even if the colour was horrible).

When ever I buy a car I ask the seller to write something a long the lines of "This car has no outstanding finance" as piece of mind, as a HPI company told me the new owner is then legally covered if a finance company wishes to come after it.

"aftercare to include topping up windscreen wash for life of new owner or vehicle, which ever is longer"
pleased to report that the very green machine is still going strong, well on it's way to 100k miles now.

i'd be interested in the above being checked- in fact id be interested in anything being relevant- i've sold loads of cars and never given a reciept for any of them!
still cant imagine anyone coming back and saying "oi, my exhaust fell off- you pay as you didnt put sold as seen on the reciept"
