SAVAGES!!!!!
call the police,
tell them there is a murderer in your garden,
(probably take them 2 hours to get there, if that so tell them someone is speeding on your road , might take them 10 minutes instead)
take him to court!

I'm sure there'll be a twitcher along in a minute but my guess would be female sparrowhawk
You're right though, they usually have a barred front.

Its a squirrel in a cunning disguise?
I thought it was a sparrow hawk when I first saw the pic.

I'd go with Dave T-S on this one and say Kestrel, Sparrowhawks also have the feathering a lot further down their legs

I am absolutely certain it is male sparrowhawk. Kestrel has a grey head and a brown back. The sparrowhawk has grey head and back. It is also somewhat bigger.

66 Blue - yep, it was a peregrine. Apparently there have been a few sightings in and around B'ham of these fine birds. I live near the countryside (5 min walk) so it's not
that out of the ordinary.

Apparently, according to a mate who is a twitcher, this is a MALE sparrowhawk. The female is larger
: with a speckled greyish to buff breast and lighter tail and back.
So now we know.

Having looked again, I'd agree - what threw me was the pigeon as victim theory - it isn't - a pigeon is about the same length as a sparrowhawk - but fatter - shot enough pigeons to recognise one of them
. The victim is about thrush size in comparison to a sparrowhawk.

Yep, the pigeon is, in fact a collared dove. Or was!
When I went out later after he'd finished his meal, all that was left were a few feathers, the lower legs, (but no feet), and the parson's nose!
