Is it worth sending off the V5 when you buy a secondhand car?

Personally, I can't see much advantage. You have the "previous" V5, the car and the keys, and in the unlikely event that you are asked to produce it by the police or your insurance company, you can send it off then and backdate it to the day you bought the car.

And there are many advantages ... avoiding taxes such as the CONgestion charge being one of them

It's the responsibility of the seller to send it off. If you don't know/like them, then it's their lookout. It will be them that gets bummed. Ideal for Speeding Fines, Parking fines and every illegal immigrant’s favourite - hit and runs.

No speeding fines, free petrol and no silly SORN fine for not taxing it. Bonus.

Or you could register it in your name, get bummed for congestion charges, bummed for running costs and fined 80 quid for not filling a form in.

Long live the UK.

You need to understand the difference between "legal owner" and "registered keeper". They are not necessarily the same person

Of course not, but it is paradoxical that the people on here are trying to get round registering a car to themselves in order to avoid wrongly prioritised offenses such as speeding tickets and congestion charge avoidance. Perhaps if the focus were on catching the original uninsured drivers rather than the easier target of legally registered drivers then we wouldn't even be having this discussion?

On a technicality, does not having your car registered to you invalidate your insurance? I am fairly certain that there is no such stipulation in my insurance.

Well personally I thought this was a theoretical discussion to illustrate why the "****** class" never bother sending off the V5.

Both of the cars in our household are properly registered

In response to some of the points above (my reason for starting the discussion was to see if any laws were being broken by those who do this):

1. If you buy a car from an auction you usually get the whole V5 minus the red portion if it's a garage part/ex.
2. You can tax a car with a V5 not in your name.
3. You are the legal owner and are therefore insured, although you are not the registered keeper.

P.S. I have a V5 in my name for my car.
