Prison Sentances
#1
Why is it that as in the case of Maxine Carr given three and a half years she could be released in half that time.
Why dont the judge just give the sentace she will be released and leave it at that????

Yes i know how that side of it works, but lets say a judge gives 5 years you end up coming out in two and a half. Why not just give two and half in the first place.
Or on the other hand serve the 5 years.
Or on the other hand serve the 5 years.

Sentenced prisoners are automatically released on licence after serving half the sentence handed down if they are well behaved and keep there noses clean in prison, and are not deemed a high risk.

Its to keep them inline - if I said to you ok your here for 5 years you'd make **** all effort to do anything right, if I said to you keep your nose clean and work towards somehting for your outside life and you 'could' get outta here earlier.
Carrot sentance.

You could always offer them a nice holiday or a trip to Alton Towers.
Why not reverse the process?
Misbehave & you get another year added on.
Or you get ground glass in your mash.
Nothing too drastic mind,we don't want the human rights mob cacking their pants.

Anyone know how the 2 concurrent life sentences for Huntley works?
If it was one, he'd presumably be out in 12-15. There's two. But they're concurrent (ie parallel). Does that have any formal bearing on his early release, or is it just another think that the parole board take into consideration?

i've never really understood what the point is of concurent sentences. i mean, if you are serving a hundred life sentences concurrently, what difference does it make?

Presumably the sentences would both have to be considered separately, thus hopefully reducing the chance of him getting parole.

15 mins on google wasn't helpful - maybe the 5-0 here can help.
ProperCharlie - I'd say it was the other way round. If you're serving 100 life sentences consecutively, what difference does it make?

The fact that the two life sentances are concurrent, another court hearing will be arranged for the early part of the new year to determine what is his minimum term will be. I would guess that the recommendation will be that he serves a minimum of something like 25 - 30 years, although the Judge may recommend that he not be made available for parole ever, in other words life will mean life.

TC, not sure I see your logic. I think there is a tariff decided for any life sentence, concurrent or not. Do you mean that, because he has two, the tariff will be higher than if he only had one?
