Been a customer of Barclays for 10 years now and they have really p!ssed me off over something so have told them to go **** themselves when they showed how blatantly they couldn't give a toss about their customers.
Is there such a thing as a good bank or are they all as cut throat and non customer focused as each other?
I need a new bank and was gonna go to Lloyds but think they might be exactly the same as Barclays.
Any recomendations?

I've been with Abbey National, well, ok Abbey, for oooh, about 28 years now, never had a problem with them, always very good.
You think you have it bad there, try a) getting a fapping bank account over here, and then trying to get a credit card. You'd think you were aksing them to allow you bugger thier 16 year old daughter! madness!

Cater Allen were ok until they started to charge £10 pm if you have less than 5k in the account.
Still haven't got round to moving the account though.
First Direct always seem to get a lot of good reports.

Yeah I'd ask why you think you need a High Street Bank. Most Internet banks allow counter transactions at selected 'partners' eg I can pay cheques into Cahoot over the counter at Post Offices.
OTOH I still have my salary paid into Barclays, they pissed me off but all my standing orders and direct debits come out the following day, including a sweep of everything left over into my Cahoot current account...I hate Barclays soo much that I thought this the best way to repay them LOL they make a days interest on my salary a month but have to process about 10 payments the next day..think thats fair.

First direct are excellent
If you're considered a good customer they will do almost anything to keep you happy (almost I said). They've extended 0% deals on my CC, given me a £25k limit option and recently enabled me to lower my loan borrowing rate as it had been lowered by a % or so a month since taking it out.
They don't offer the best rates arround but first class service is everything these days IMHO.

Yeah Cahoot offer some service whereby they'll courier over bundles of cash if needs-be, but I've always got the (wife don't know about it) Citibank account to transfer in and out of also. Had an anti-money laundering course here recent;y and I learnt loads about layering LOL

NATIONWIDE. It's still mutual - says it all really. NO SHAREHOLDERS or 19% APR credit cards...
Cheap overdrafts, great online banking and every Xmas they give me enough cash for a slap up meal & night out from the interest they give me on my current account. Nice

Another vote for first direct. All good experience and no bad ones in 7 or so years.
They offer a pretty comprehensive service over the phone, much more than Barclays

Markus stick it in the washing machine, it comes out lovely and clean
Cheers for the help guys, still waiting for phone calls back from my branch of Barclays after giving them some grief
New bank definately happening though no matter what Barclays do now.
Always put off by First Direct as you can't walk in anywhere and talk to someone face to face. Also how you get money out the wall, are all banks partnered with them so you don't get charged for using another banks hole in the wall for cash? (sorry for the stupid question!)

They are part of HSBC so you can pay in at any HSBC bank, withdraw from Link, Natwest, HSBC with no charge.
Why do you want to talk face to face, do it all on the phone or via email sitting on your backside with a nice can of lager. Apply for loan, ring up, tell em how much you want, short time on hold, answer - yes, overdraft extended to cover loan at no charge, forms sent, returned, overdraft cleared. Job done
Even have my mortgage with them, using their one account type thing.

Merlin - at last! I am always bemused as to those that pref to bank with companies with shareholders to pay dividends to. I prefer receiving dividends and that as a customer! Just compare APR's on mortgages, overdrafts & credit cards & their fees if you go a day in the red or bounce a DD. Best to still shop around for financial products though.
