Just got back from Holiday to find that my flatmate turned off the fridge/freezer on his 'turning everything off' mission . I had several kgs worth of steak in the freezer, cheeses, etc, etc!! At first we thought it was the fridge as it had lots of mould growing in it! Then we opened the freezer and I cannot describe how bad it is!! There is a puddle of death at the bottom of it and the whole flat stinks worse than anything I've ever smelled in my life
He's in the kitchen trying to sort it out but what can he do? We can't really afford a new fridge/freezer so whats the best way to clean it so that its hygenic and doesn't smell? All advice greatfully received as currently the flat isn't really habitable!!!!!

strerilise it with strong bleach first. then rinse well and then go to boots and see what neutrodol stuff they have - it is supposed to work
i have done the same thing once, luckily parents were feeding the cats daily and noticed the puddle of water under the freezer! the threw out anything before it had the chance to decompose!! mate at work, who was an electrician at the time, did exactly the same but it is the sort of thing you only do once

Dunno anything about that neutrodol stuff that JJ mentioned but another way to get rid of nasty niffs in the fridge is to put several raw onions chopped in half, into the fridge. After a day or so, the smells should be gone and no onion smell is left.
If it doesn't get rid of the putrifying smell right now, bear it in mind for after whatever treatment you find in Boots.
Good luck !

Talking of rotten meat !!
We were clearing a mates site of old stone before he builds his new house today.
He was sat in the digger and I was outside moving stones.
All of a sudden he roared " HAVE YOU FARTED ?? !!" to which I replied "NO !"
Then I noticed that he had infact driven over a dead rabbit ! The poor wee soul had obviously been departed for some time and was now well and truly burst open ! The stink was soooooooo overpowering !!
.....not really on topic but just thought I would share itwith you all

The onion thing could be worth a go, I'll buy some tomorrow.
Any other suggestions? We completely bleached the inside of the fridge/freezer is that enough to kill off all the germs?

Once you've cleaned it as best you can, try halving some fresh lemons/limes and leaving them in there for a bit.
Change them for more fresh ones after a couple of days.
That should help rid it of the smell.
