(taken from the PCG website)

Between Reading and Swindon on the M4, cameras have been inset into small pillars placed periodically along the motorway. These will measure the average speed between them - they are linked directly to DVLA.

Go-live was slated for 14th July so in all probability it's live already. I have this unofficially from a manufacturer of a major system component - I would rate this 85% reliable.

This is a major pain in the proverbial especially for those of us who regularly travel this stretch of the M4 at between 1 the 3 in the morning.

Cheers. For those who haven't seen the other threads, looks like it could be a hoax - which is a relief! Hadn't seen any cameras

the cameras are there....Look like cctv cameras- but then, could very easily be specs- which would average speed you.

I hope to god they arent- as i travel to and from work some nites down there (niteclub in newbury) and i am really shifting some nites on my way home....like 100+..

If you look on the giant message boards- the camera are there yes, and there are lots of strange grey posts also....

Don't they have to put up signs to tell you that permanently installed cameras are active? Hiding them and not warning people about cameras would be revenue generation rather than safety improvements, and we know that all cameras are about safety.

Fortunately I was only doing 70 past them today as I was on the phone

Looks like i will be risking the £30 fine (or pink slip from experience ) for no number plates front and rear- as opposed to licence lostus for speeding at 3:30 am from now on....

Thinking about it, two out of the last three times I've been past (tend to do it every week at the mo), there has been a copper on the hard shoulder with a hand held laser thing (nearer the Swindon end in both cases). Seems unlikely he'd bother if they had cameras too? Unless he was "testing the water" prior to the cameras going live.

On the BBC Berkshire Travel website, when they were giving advance warning of the roadworks between J5 and J7 of the M4 stated that the roadworks were for carriageway repairs and speed sensor installation.

I took this to mean speed sensors that are linked to the traffic management signs, like on the M25 that say 'Congestion' or 'Queue Ahead'.

I assume it is the same for between Reading and Swindon as they have just installed the traffic signs.
