Studied AI at Uni as part of my computing course, doubt that anything coming close to Human intelligence could be developed within the next 50 years or so. Problem is of course that "intelligence" is so hard to quantify, as for self awareness you'd be devling deep into Metaphysics..
Think we are safe from Arnie for the time being - although some research should be done on that cute female terminator...

I only ask the question cos when I was in the Army about 13 or 14 years ago I knew a guy in civvie who was developing software to teach a robot how to balance a broom handle on its end by learning through repertition. He estimated 75-100 years for self aware development.
But yes you can imagine the scenario of the dreaded Blue Screen on say an airplane of air traffic control consol.

A life size version of this with about the same level of mobility was made years ago by another (completely unlikely) Japanese company.
Any guesses which one? You'll never guess!

Pah! Why worry about rise of the machines. It'll be a clone army before that happens. Makes way more sense, get a good baseline DNA sample, then modify it to build the perfect soldier, then clone away. A nice, ruthless and more important totaly expendble infantry. Why send in bombers when you could send in 10,000 expendable troops to do a similar job (yeah, I know, bad and silly example!)
I really don't think we shall see, in our lifetimes, any problems with 'sentient' machines. But who knows, see how far we have come in the last 100 years, and these days things move fast.

The processing power and memory capacity necessary to match general intellectual performance of the human brain are estimated. Based on extrapolation of past trends and on examination of technologies under development, it is predicted that the required hardware will be available in cheap machines in the 2020s.
