Question

Had a go at my wheels today after a recommendation for WW.

I had quite a lot of hard brakes dust patches and marks.

Quite impressed with it. Not a bad job at all with limited elbow grease and shifted stuff I have been scrubbing at with sponge, soap and water - to no avail.

My only concern is that when I next go to get the car out of the garage, my wheels will have disintergrated!

Scanned the destructions before starting but read them properly afterwards. Doh! Quote from the box "....not suitable for .... wheels with damaged lacquer". My wheels definitely have some surface damage where balancing weights have been or where they have been hit by a stones etc.

Am I just a worry wort or are my wheels going to melt now?

Cheers

Matt

It's pretty acidic stuff and will remove paint after only a few applications if the laquer is missing,it also gives the chrome wheel nuts some grief, rinse really well and it should be ok but i don't know how it'll react with bare alloy
It sure removes brake dust with a vengence though dunnit....

I've used it for the last 6 or 7 years and never have had a problem with damaging any wheels.

Routine I use (FWIW):-

Wash wheels with car shampoo
Apply with brush one wheel at a time, brushing into bad bits
Go round again with wonder wheels
Use brush again only where its lifted any tar / turned it brown
Bucket loads of rinsing

Half an hour tops

Try to use less cleaning fluids and more elbow grease. It wont come up mint first of all, but every now and again have another go at it. You can get a decent wheel brush from most places that wont scratch the laquer off. Oh and do it before you set off on a trip as the heat will will just bake it on and make it harder work.

It'll probably leave black spots first of all, but they should come off. Once there back to how they should be or what your happy with, then wack some polish on them or even wet wax/shampoo.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but I like my wheels to look mint and pay a lot of attention to them....

Thanks everyone for the advise on usage of WW and cleaning.

You think then that I won't have melted my wheels?

You tried using a clay bar? Wax Wizard or Meguires do 'em. Worked alright on mine.

Question

Anyone know what the lacquer is that they put on wheels? Just standard lacquer?? I want to do the INSIDES of mine, once I get 'em clean:, and I'd like 'em to stay cleaner, and be easier to clean...............or have I lost the plot:

Wink

Wheels should be OK , just try to only use the stuff if you have to.Get the wheels as clean as you can using wonder wheels rinse off etc , then dry them and apply a good coat of polish ,basically treat your wheels like your paintwork . Next time you come to wash them the brake dust should just wash off without having to use any wheel cleaner .
Enjoy

Thanks for the comforting Dave. That is what I was hoping someone would say

I'll rest easy now knowing when I go to fetch her out to play at the weekend, she wont be sitting on the floor in a puddle of alloy

I would be very careful using wonder wheels - DO NOT GET IT ON YOUR CALIPERS - this stuff has bleached the calipers grey/white on my 03 wrx i am in the process of getting this sorted with Tetrosyl - see wheels and tyres thread if you want any more detail.
