Question

Has anybody ever used Wonder Wheels to clean a set of STI Gold wheels?? Mine are caked with brake dust and mud/salt from the past few weeks, and Wonder Wheels has always brought up the wheels on my previous cars a treat.... However, I don't want to take the paint off as well, although I know some of you would say that would be a good thing...

Thanks.

Darren

Darren,

I've used WonderWheels several times on STi Gold Wheels withouts any problems.

I normally polish the wheels with Autoglym afterwards - Brake dust, etc. then seems to wash off fairly easily.

Cheers,

Ian.

I gave up using wonder wheels on my last wheels
I found that it destroyed them slowly ...
Someone told me afterwards that you really should only use it very sparingly now and again
Say every 3 months or so & only if your wheels are well caked with grime

Have used wonder wheels on silver and Gold wheels last ones my 00 6 spokes in Gold. Wet the wheels first then brush on and leave to foam for a minute , then spray off with the hose. Havent had any probs myself been using it for 18 months. Graham.

Darren, all alloys are painted so it shouldn't make any difference what colour they are.

Darren,

on advice from the Wax Wizard I haven't used Wonder Wheels on my gold alloys .... because it really does strip them ..... the choice is yours. Get some cleaner from Mr Underwood ... does the job a treat.

Turtle wax wheel cleaner is better than Wonder Wheels, try that. Lasts longer too.

Just like NAF I have found that long term, Wonder wheels damages your wheels.
When I first used it I was amazed at how well it gets the crap off but over time it just wrecked my wheels.

It contains phosphoric acid (I think) and while this has no effect on the paint itself it reacts with the alloy underneath through damage from stones and grit etc, normally on the leading edge of the spokes. You end up with black speckles and staining which is impossible to get off without using wonder wheels again and eventually the paint peels off.

If you have newish wheels with only a small amount of stone rash you should be fine, but if they are older I would only use it now and again and your wheels will be better in the long run.

Andy

PS If you want to see just how corrosive it is leave a new 2p coin soaking in it for half an hour.

Wonder Wheels is acid based. Fine if that paint/lacquer on your wheels have absolutly no cracks/damage/pores etc, but as soon as it find the smallest fissure, it eats away at the metal.

I used to use WW, one of my wheels had a tiny 'kerb', barely visable. 2 months of using WW it was an inch by two inch patch of corroded(sp?) wheel metal. WW had eaten the lacquer, paint and wheel away Also destroyed by nuts

Wizard of Wax wheel cleaner is non-corrosive, and performs better than wonder wheels - and is cheaper!!

McCrash - Turtle wax cleaner better?? the stuff in the green 'can'?? Unless they have dramatically changed it, water alone is more effective on brake dust!! You don't work for turtle wax by any chance do you??

Yes a Gold Wheel club would be great

Could I be an honourary member?

We could call it the 'Handbags at Dawn' club???

'Girlie Goldie Club' has a ring about it too!!

Having a gold wheel fan club is all good and well........But to be defined as a club means it should have more than just one member
