3 weeks ago I gashed my thigh/knee on my tool box, the gash [finar finar] is just over 5 inches long & deep, bleed like hell but eventualy stopped bleeding, after 2 days her in doors made me go to the hospital as it kept bleeding on & off, saw a nurse who said yes it should have had stiches but its was too old now, she gave me a tetnus shot & that was that.
the cut still keeps weeping, sometimes a yellow puss sometimes blood colour, the area all around the cut is hot to touch, wife says I should go back to the hospital, being a little chicken I dont want to.
Asking for second opinion or advice for anyone in the know, I checked for gangareen by sticking it in front of the dogs & seeing if they were interest in it nope.
cheers

I have a 3" scar on my shin as a result of a drunken toy scrap with a mate in the pub car park years ago. Like you, I should have had it stitched but the next morning when I woke up in a bed full of blood I wrongly thought sod it, its too late for stitches.
it took bloody ages to heal, and instead of a thin line for a scar, there is now a patch of hideous discoloured skin about 3" long and 1/2" wide, and it still itches sometimes.
I'd get to the doctors if I were you

Sounds like its infected to me. Keep the area clean and possibly apply a loose clean dressing over the top. See your GP/A+E, they may take a swab sample to test for an infection and give you some broad spectrum antibiotics that should work ie. Flucloxacillin, Erytromycin, Amoxycillin.

Get it checked out by your GP or A&E
If the area surrounding the wound is red hot and tender it is probably infected. Unless the wound was particularly gaping I would expect it to have closed by 3 weeks.
Do you have a temperature? Do you feel unwell in yourself?
Get it checked before you develop a more serious infection. By the way the nurse was right not to close the wound after 2 days.

thanks for all the relies on here & off list.
I went to the DR's & yes I have an infection, he took swabs of the muck comming out of the knee, he then put some liquid on it which burnt like hell, but it cleaned the cut, it was then dressed properly & I now have to take some horse tablets to help cure the infection & go & see the nurse each day to get the dressing changed.
Dr. was not overly polite about the care I gave the cut or the dressing that I had put on it, shabby one of his words & scaring will happen.
word to anyone with a deep cut, get it seen to properly

Barge, contrary to mice elf's suggestion, if it ever happens again go straight to accident and emergency and get professional assistance

Southstar has made the point loud and clear....
it's infected... get it sorted.... sooner rather than later... stop being a wus...
but the plus side is you've had your tetnus shot....but get it sorted ...
