I am off to New York next week for 3 nights then on to Florida for 12 nights.
Can any one recommend some good places to visit etc in New York apart from the main/well known sites?
I have been to Florida before so know roughly whats there but was 3 years ago so probably changed a fair bit.

There's a deli on Madison avenue and 47th street just up from the Madison Hotel that is great. The best food we had all the time we were out there. Called "The Metro"
WTC site, if you are into that.
Liberty helicopters at Pier 9 just off 32nd street for a helicopter tour of the city for £60. Well worth the time and money.
Strawberry fields if you are a beetles fan. Just off 72nd street and 4th avenue.
Toys'R'Us in time square is also worth a visit.
There is also a bar just down 1 block from the Crysler building that does some amazing cocktails.
Then don't forget to visit Little Italy, China Town SoHo, and Greenwich Village.
Have a blast.

I dont mean to put a downer on your trip, but my sister went to New York a few years back. Her and her fella wanted to go up the empire state building but decided not to because it was really misty and waited till the next day. Thank god they didnt go, the time they had actually planned it for, a dutch madman went up and shot everyone there .

Tabla on Madison Square Park for great Indian food.
Craft, somewhere in Lower Midtown, off Madison Ave, I think. Excellent modern cuisine.
Asia De Cuba, Morgans Hotel, around 34th and Madison. Great fusion food and bar. Great hotel, too.
Balthazar, off Broadway around Prince or Spring St. French style brasserie with busy atmosphere and good food.
Off the beaten track, catch the 7 train to Flushing, aka Little Taipei. Huge Taiwanese community in one of the outer boroughs. Restaurants, etc.
Also check the listings for the jazz clubs. Jazz legends can often be found playing in these little clubs. If jazz ain't your thing, try Justins for caribean food with an R&B soundtrack (a couple of blocks south of Union Square).

Thanks for the info so far guys/gals.
Ain't too fussed about the "nutters" etc running about shooting people. You never know what round the corner and if ya worried about them type of things you would never leave your house.
One_Lung, Ha yea seen some of the hooters places in florida going with my girl friend so have to keep my eyes to myself
Looking forward to it, can't wait

New york is much safer than London, you wait till you see how many police officers and security people there are, made our trip all the more enjoyable, i been back 5 times with not one problem.

i'd ditto what slowboy said and add a few things - my main advice would be to buy a couple of guide books.
central park south on a sunday
FAO Schwartz toy shop (central park south)
museum of modern art (moma) in midtown
Barolo - italian restaurant with a garden - very pretty if warm enough
Macy's - huge choice in 1 store, bloomingdales - classier
South Street Sea Port next to wall st - fantastic views
SoHo shopping, cafes, bars etc
there's so much you could go on and on ... my favourite city.

get down to the village - and just wonder around the bars - the best part of NYC - ignore the upper east side - dull bollox - ignore the park, its overrated rubbish - upper west side ok fun - walk all the way up fifth avenue shopping expecially around 30-50th street

also The View at the top of the Marriott just of Time Square. It takes an hour to revolve, best to go just at dusk, you get to see the city in daylight and then in darkness.
If you're down at Macy's may as well pop into the Empire State. Sak's fifth avenue is NY's equivalent to Harrods. Central Park is good, but mind the dog mess.
Great restaurant is the Red Eye Grill. It's biassed towards seafood, but is great. I stayed at the Meridian, and they recommended it, my old boss who is a New Yorker said at one point it was THE place to be seen. I reckon it's still popular, me and Mrs P got there for dinner at 11pm and when we left about 12.30 people were still arriving!!!! They had a jazz band playing as well...
Enjoy
