Why won't British Airways let Virgin Atlantic take over Concorde? They're prepared to give them away to a museum free of charge, but they won't let Branson buy them and continue to run them? I know he was only offering £1 each, but that's not the point. He says he can run them more efficiently than BA.
Sounds like a spoilt little kid who'd rather smash his toys than let anyone else play with them

Branson is challenging BA's decision not to sell him the aircraft. They were sold to BA for £1 in the first place by the government.
He is asking the government to intervene. He is also saying that he could run them and make a profit as his airline is a lot more efficient than BA.
Branson is arguing that something that cost the country/taxpayers billions of pounds really belongs to the country sort of and shouldnt be scrapped when it still has many years service life left.
He has a point!

At least if BA send the Concordes to museums, they will remain in British hands!
If Beardy gets hold of them, they will become assets to flog off when he needs to prop up his dodgy business empire

<Cynic mode on>
It's all a big ploy to boost passengers!
They say that it will come out of commmision late summer, hmmm.. Everyone that has said "I want to fly on Concorde just once before I pop me clogs" will panic buy tickets so increasing sales... BA a bit later in the year -> due to increased sales we will extend till next January, more people still thinking about it will think "good I have a bit more time to save" and then book the flight later in the year! January comes, BA extends "dealine" a bit further!!! etc. etc.
<Cynic mode off>
Just a hunch but there you go!

Its like taking a step back in time.
Bit like people having electric trains and then going back to steam trains. It means that for the younger generations will never have an opportunity to travel so quickly from country to country

Pontificating
Virgin have cancelled their 1st JFK and LAX flights for the entire month of May and have been cancelling for the past 4 months so maybe business is not as good as he would like to think but they did win Cargo Airline of the year for the 2nd year running and as a user of their cargo services I have to say they are a brilliant airline and they are 1000 times better than BA who really couldnt care less and fail to load for up to 3 days at a time!!!.

This has been on again today. Branson has asked the government to intervene, but it sounds unlikely that they will. They're going to leave it up to BA, and they will probably let them go to a museum. What a total load of cr@p! The planes belong to the taxpayer anyway. Let Branson try to make a profit with them. There must be some reason why the government won't let him buy them. This whole thing stinks.
Like I said originally - just like a kid who'd rather smash his toys than let anyone else play with them.

I remember when branson was going to take over the national lottery, IIRC he was going to do it so it was fairer for the public, ie bigger jackpot and less profit for themselves and the government and less of the sh1te opera houses & the dome getting lottery funds etc.
i think the government would have lost out as well so in the end branson didnt get it.
somebody please correct me if i'm wrong

Personally, I'd like to see BA say yes to Branson's proposal just to see how quickly he'd shut up and run off with his tail between his legs.
I can't see this as more than a publicity stunt (which is good value for Virgin) but how on earth he reckons he can afford it all and persuade Airbus to underwrite the continuing servicing costs is beyond me.
