Public Key Infrastructure?

It depends what you want to do,
The most common is RSA which is used in PGP (pretty good privicy). There are some funny laws to do with strong encryption and they seem to change alot! The Americans concidered strong encryption a munitions at one point!
If you mail me with some more specific details I will do my best to answer some questions for you as I am just finishing a Dissertation for my degree. Part of that was on Internet security so I have half of the BCS's books on the subject!!
Edited to say I used this book loads and it is really good on the subject
Broken link! - fixed!

Its really everything to do with eCommerce security & what would be best. Thats either software or hardware.

Not sure quite why you are interested? But it looks as if the government is heading towards the use of Smartcard technology, but is waiting for some commercial organisations (banks) to do all of the leg work and will then buy it off of them
This will then by default become the 'standard' and we will all be able to get on with delivering e-government :-)
From a government/legislative perspecitve very little detail available...

Open this up a bit...
Anyone out there an SME that would feel the need to have and use a hardware based PKI solution?
Or can anyone offer comment as to the take-up of such a solution.
Assume that the product is highly secure, with the operator (not us!) taking all possible measures to ensure that the person at either end is the person the other person thinks they are (the recipient) & that the integrity of the data is unbreachable. Cost is NOT high...
So who in the SME market would use this product & why?

Not strictly SME but most government agencies would be interested as they are having to exchange sensitive data more and more. Also with NFPs and other NGOs.
