Any ideas how to get a record deal?

A few of my mates are studying music at college and their also in a band. As their at college, they have access to a studio and are recording all their songs on to a cd.
But once they have all their songs on a cd, then what? Do they just send them off to a record company? They really want a record deal and I know their good enough to make it.
Does anybody know anyone who works for a record company and could help?
Cheers.

I worok in the Music Industry (producer for a well-known reggae pop band & dance artist).
There is NO easy way to get a record deal - otherwise EVERYBODY would have one!!!
The best advice I can give you is :-
1. Depending on what type of music it is, go for a publishing deal instead. One of the 1st questions a record company will ask is "Who does your publishing?" ......
2. Again, depending on what style of music it is, try to release it yourself. Get a 1000 CDs pressed and get in touch with some distribution companies.....
3. Agent/management - waste of time unless you're beginning to get a big following or interest from record companies. see the vicious circle forming?
4. Try different countries - the UK is one of the hardest markets to break, due to fickle audience (sorry, but we Brits a fussy barstools!!!)
5. Get in touch with other forms of releasing media - promo music for CDRoms, training videos, film festivals etc.....
Hope this helps.

I used to manage a talented, but unknown rock band called Noisy Toys.
It's a hard slog, touting demos round record co's A&R people, trying to get the press interested at gigs etc.
There is no easy way to this unless you get a lucky break, which most don't.
Of course, there is always the Fame Academy/Pop Stars route, which unfortunately is no reflection of real talent
In Noisy Toys' case, they solved the problem for me since, as happens in many cases, they self destructed

Dunno, but I think it's best to try and get the name of a producer/ talent scout-type in the Company and speak to them if they can rather than sending it off on-spec.
If you can imagine receiving hundreds of them every day with just "To whom it may concern" on the address, you'd get pretty p*ssed off, especially if 90% are all sh*te
The more professional it looks, the better chance I reckon.
Do they check out any of the regular monthly's ?
Could be hints/ addresses etc in the back pages..
