Got loads of bits lying around so thought i'd build myself a simple system to surf scoobynet whilst everyone else fight for our main PC in the house.

I've got all the bits, however i can't work out how the switches (power, reset, hdd led etc...) go onto the pins on the motherboard that kind look like this

::::::::::::

I don't have a manual for the board, however i know it's out of a Dell Dimension 233 and it has loads of numbers all over it .

DIMMS or SIMMS? Some of them take simms.
If you are looking at the board from bottom to top, about half way up on the right edge of the board, are there a clump of jumpers together like this ::::::, If so then it could be one of the boards that is dependant on the little PCB screwed into the old cases to fire them up/reset etc..... Has it been working in a normal case before NOT a Dell case?

They are cofigured like this

<B>.. . ... :'::::::</B>

<B>:</B> and <B>'</B> are pins

I have both links working fine here.

What type of socket is it for the CPU, If it is a Pentium socket, the actual socket should actually have SocketX embossed on it, where X is 3,5 or 7

Cheers,

Unhappy

That link didn't work for me first time. Had to refresh my browser a few times before it showed up. I'm connect through Blueyonder's cache server - maybe just an ISP prob.

Ozzy, you can count that one out as it is from an early PII board.

a nasty feeling that it was that. I have had a lot of experience with these dells, but I have always has the original case for these older ones.... you can understand why now I think
Canny help any more i'm afraid.
Have you kept the PSU to go with it??
These boards almost always have a hybrid ATX/AT PSU as you have probably noticed by the connectors on the Motherboard

Sorry,

Nick

Sorry, forgot to mention that these Control panel bits are basically 1 big socket, resembling the sockets that you have on old Internal COM port cables. Flat ribbon cable from there goes into a PCB planted in the front of the Case. Damn, I had one of these fella's here until a couple of weeks ago.

Sorry again,

Nick

I think we have some of these cases at work, i can't really take the cases, but the bits out of them are no problem. Am i right in thinking this PCB has the switches and leds built into it??

Yup. You REALLY need one of the cases. You can't get hold of one of them????

Was the motherboard 'acquired'?? (cough)

The Motherboard is legit, however .. Most of the Older Pc's in our Storeroom turno out to be Empty Cases when they are needed.

I Can't take the case, but if i know what to take out of it, i can get the stuff..

What do i need?

The PSU and the PCB with connector. PSU above all if the Motherboard has the half AT connector along with the ATX one. You will not get her running without them.
