Airmiles, you're right mate - sorry.

AndyMac, I've been with Verio Rapidsite for a while, and have reseller accounts with Magic Moments, but neither will let me have read write execute permissions for the cgi-bin (or even the 4 files inside here that need it)

Just wondering if you could recommend a host who'll offer this and what sort of server spec you recommend to look after the forum (eg. is it especially resource consuming)

I was thinking of writing one in ASP, which we use heavily for SQL queries, etc (hence the need for me to run UBB on an NT server)...but that would take a fair bit of trial and error, besides UBB is a fine example of how to do a forum right.

You don't know if there's an alternative package for NT servers ?

Guys guys guys

1. If you really really want to run UBB on windows then I'll host it for you, and let you have the permissions you want. But I wouldn't recommend it.

Lee,

Thanks for the hosting offer - but I could co-locate a server myself.

What I wanted really was some shared hosting space on an NT server. Not UNIX as I need to run ASP for my search queries on a SQL Server backend

Why do you say you wouldn't recommend it (Nt Server + UBB) ?

I'm confused I wasn't offering a server but what you were after - a chunk of space/bandwidth to virtual host your site.

Why wouldn't I recommend it ? Mainly because UBB was originally written for a UNIX system running perl/sendmail. Now I'm having no digs or a "mine's better than yours" debate but scoobynet has had a few problems in the past with perl memory leaks, sendmail not working quite how it should etc etc. All I am saying is that an application written for UNIX will run best on UNIX. Certainly NT will require a beefier machine to run the application than UNIX, but then thats just typical of NT vs UNIX.

If it had been written for NT it would be in ASP, then the other side of the coin would be people asking "I've got UNIX and chillisoft ASP..shall I run UBB?"

As simple as that.

Remember, I'm not into a UNIX vs NT battle..I run both which gives me the best of both worlds.

Appreciate the offer Lee - I'm not fussy whether I use Unix or NT either - horses for courses and all that, but in this instance I need ASP in the same website as UBB, which means an NT server unfortunately.

Not to worry - I think my problem is solved. Fasthosts have just said they'll do it for me.

Now I'll just have to hope the resources of their server can withstand the pounding a couple of hundred memebers will give it!

Thanks for your offer.

Daz,

tend to agree with Lee, but for your peace of mind have been running UBB on IIS for a couple of years now, and not had any problems as yet. Thats with about a max of 250 members though, and the turn over is NOTHING like that seen on scoobynet (I doubt there are many instances which are - except game zones)

Hasnt been any problems anyway!

cheers

Mattski,
Thats interesting - I'll check it out thanks.

Lee,
Thanks for the warning. I'm on a monthly payment scheme to begin with to see how they behave. Got to say I'm impressed so far (stats, browser config for my accounts, etc)
