Question

I have just installed WindowsME over Windows98SE. Everything is working fine except that the system hangs when set to close.
It will reboot fine.
It will close from Safe mode.
I have disabled sound card drivers, changed video driver etc as recommended in the trouble shooter. I am running out of ideas.
I currently close down by hitting reboot and then the off switch once it has closed down. I had no problem like this with Win98SE.

Cheers

Hello,

Try it with everything unplugged (Modems Printers etc)

Also try disabling APM ,advanced power management as this could be causing it as it may hang when the bios it tring to kill the power?

Check your motherboard manufacturer's website to see if there are any flash BIOS updates. Win2K required certain power management features in the BIOS for full functionality so I guess ME may be the same.

Cool

We had something similar to this with our Compaq laptops at work. Are you using a laptop? We had to get a service pack from Compaq to resolve our problem.

Question

BIOS APM is disabled.

Strange thing is that I was talking to a guy at work. His son had loaded ME onto 3 machines, 1 with a clean install. They all had this problem for about a week and then all started behaving normally!

Cool

APM should actually be enabled...I've had problems when it has been turned off.

Check the settings for plug'n'play in the bios...if available let the OS handle that biz.

Next thing is to upgrade the BIOS.

Jerry

Thanks, I have an FIC 1stMainboard motherboard. My BIOS is '97 I think & I have found an April '00 BIOS update. I will give that a go and see what happens!

Well, new hard drive, new modem (thanks for the advice Lee). Fresh install of WindowsME and everything seems to be swiming along nicely
