STI has made a really good point. For example, Abbey Road in London used to have loads of meters on side streets, parking was never an issue. Then they rip 95% of them up and do residents only which are empty on the most part during week days so there's nowhere to park for miles with stacks of cars circling round and round. Madness....

STi - let me turn it around, what would YOU do? If the answer is to park where you are NOT supposed to then expect a ticket - if its £100 well you DO know the possible outcome prior to committing an offence. 'There was no spaces left officer' is NO defence whatsoever!!

Its not about parking where you shouldnt..But been 1 min late on a meter.
In London the Monkeys wait when they see less than 5 mins left on the meter. Bang on the second they start writing the ticket.
Now that is out of order. This should only be used for Red routes,Double yellows ect

Where you parked, Go back have a really good look at the lines on the road. If there is a break in the line eg:- paint rubbed off, roadworks etc or the line doesn't have a perpendicular line running across both of the ends to terminate it, then its null and void and you can contest it at court. This applies regardless of the length of line (which could be 2 mile long) Also if the line is not specifically painted to the bylaw (which you will find at the local library)null and void again. There also needs to be warning signs up on posts at regular intervals as well or its null and void. You may not be so lucky in the centre of London as the line painters may keep them well up to date but the law can swing both ways.
Also if you take a parking space, they will nail you for it if your ticket runs out as the legislation applies specifically to the parking bay only, but you can park on the chevrons next to it if your not causing an obstruction, very useful on a bike, as I park right outside my local council offices and they can't do a thing about it

Sti - in answer to your question, I would have to return home - simple really???? Then I have learned a valuable lesson, be earlier or use the train. If you cannot get there and park then DONT GO THERE!! I really cannot believe how simple the answer is??
Luke - dont be late, again - simple - If you return 10 minutes EARLY there is NO problem, if you arrive 1 minute early - again no problem!! If you arrive 1 minute late, you are late end of story. Why can you not get back to your car early?
I have the answer, park where you should, pay what you should or DONT go there!!

Thank you for answering my question. It makes a change from you playing devils advocate all the time Isn't it a bit extreme Pete going all the way home again!? (especially if you had made a reasonable length journey to get there)
I personally would find somewhere to park legally, even though it may be slightly further away from where I wanted to be and then walk to my destination. I am young, fit and healthy so to me that is not a problem. I wonder what would happen if the person was getting on a bit and the old hips were starting go?

IMO, enforcement is about common sense Pete. Being a minute or two late back to the car isn't anything major. Fair enough, book somebody who is 30+ minutes overdue but do a few minutes hurt anyone? Nope.

Luke - I certainly am!!
ChrisB - so, I would advice that, if you think you will be gone 2 hours - just pay the extra 20p for another 30minutes and aim for the original time - SORTED!!
God no wonder I earn so much more than you lot I am sooooooo clever!!

i think cars parked on double yellows WITH HAZZARDS should be squashed. Utterly rediculous, its like putting a big flag up saying "I know i am in the wrong SO **** OFF!!!"

I am aware of the correct use of English, I was talking as though I hadn't realised that I shouldnt park somewhere just because there was no space - see?? As the person who couldnt work it all out would speak like that dont you think? Not having my, and your, intelligence!!
