Why is it that bananas go grey now when they age rather than in the old days when they went deep yellow/brown and then dark brown? Is it a freezing process before we buy them?
(Can't tell I'm unemployed )

Do they? Mine always go dark brown. Or at least they would, if I ever bought any... Don't like banananananananas, hackshully.
But the ones at my folks's place always go brown if they are left uneaten...

Im a produce chimp for Sainsburys
Grey?? Never come across that case, sounds moldy.
As for freezing, doubt it. They go nowhere near the freezer same as potatoes and basil

Grey? How odd. Mine get brown spots, then brown all over, then balck, and finally the skin splits and the inner goo leaks out into the fruit bowl. And then I chuck them in the bin.

They go grey in reaction to the cold. Therefore, they only do it at this time of year. If you put one in the freezer, you'll speed up the process, if you really have nothing better to do on a friday evening!

The definately arn't frozen, or even chilled for that matter.
On this note, always be wary when picking them up in Tesco (and other supermarkets) as it's not uncommon to find a large, exotic spider inside the polythene in the box, on its holidays from the Windward Isles <judders>
Merry Xmas,
Paul

One of my old mates use to work for a Bananna wholesaler
It was pretty common runing out the back of the containers when you saw something hairy moving around in the bunches lol
Yes is they get to cold it causes grey marks on them
Bananna sandwiches with sugar on are good

I'm Chiquita Banana, and I've come to say
bananas have to ripen in a certain way.
When they are flecked with brown and have a certain hue,
bananas taste the best, and are the best for you.
You can put them in a salad.
You can put them in a pie - aye.
Anyway you want to eat them it's impossible to beat them.
But bananas like the climate of the very, very tropical equator. So you should never put bananas in the refrigerator."
