My fiancee is a hairdresser and gets paid cash weekly, at the end of each tax year she gets a P60 but she doesn't get a pay slip each week when she gets paid.

After experiencing problems with getting a mortgage because she is paid cash we have finally managed to convince her boss to pay her money by BACS. We are currently looking into taking some of the equity out of our house via a homeowner loan but, again, are having problems as we can't prove how much she gets paid because she gets paid cash and never gets payslips.

Should you legally get a pay slip everytime you are paid a wage? This would help us with obtaining finance if her boss has to give her one and could we reasonably ask her boss to supply us with backdated ones for the last month?

Cheers,

Gareth

Yes

You are legally entitled to a Payslip

A P60 is a summary for the year but should receive a payslip for each payment [especially if your being paid cash]

Thanks Phil, do you know if we would be able to request payslips for the last month? (bearing in mind the missus' boss tries to get out of doing anything that isn't legally required!)

Cheers,

Gareth

I don't think theres a legal requirement to provide copies of previously issued payslips, but you could always ask for the original copies she should have been getting.

Alternatively you could ask for a letter from the employers, stating what her earnings were each week for the month. I do this all the time for employees who've lost payslips, as I am unable to reprint them. As far as I know no-ones had any problems useing these with mortgate co's an the like.

If the boss is relcutant to do this point out that if s/he'd issued the payslips your missus was legally entitled to it wouldn't be nescessary.

edited to correct speeling

Her boss should be able to get the details from his/her accountant. You don't need it in payslip form. A letter from the boss and one from the accountant is perfectly acceptable. You can get a mortgage based on self certification (no other proof needed) but a lender would be looking for a high loan to value ratio, or would increase the interest rate because of the risk involved.

At some point next year it will be a legal requirement (April I think?)to get a payslip to match the frequency of your pay.

Hope that helps.
