Looking to make my first purchase Some websites seem to sell versions of brand new units which have had their software hacked to play all disc regions but still have a warranty.
What are the pro's and con's to this and why don't manufacturers sell multi region units if it is so easy? Should these systems cost more or less than standard? Is it worth getting multi region at all?
Cheers

The deal is that region encoding is done so that DVD's can be charged at different prices in different countries and released at different times.
The DVD player manufacturers would love to sell you a multi-region player, but if they do they loose their license to use the DVD technology. So what a lot of them do is make it easy to convert to multi-region using a 'hack'. This can vary from a simple code on the remote to a real hardware modification costing something like 50-100 quid.

I should add, the reason for having multi-region is that you can watch Region 1 (US) DVDs. These are cheaper than UK ones even after shipping over here.
They also tend to come out 2-4 months before they do over here.

Was looking at a Sony DAV-S550. It is a DVD player/surround sound amplifier combined. Also I have seen the model it replaced at heavily discounted price(DAV-S500) so I am trying to decide between the two even though one is no longer the latest model.
As a secondary question, how much beter is Dolby Pro-Logic II than the original Dolby Pro-Logic?

DO NOT BUY A Sony , they do not play many of the 2 speed pirate DVDR's which are now rife. The best buy at the moment is the mustek (cant remember the model number) but they are 75 quid and are multi-regional/no macrovision/mp3/svcd/vcd/dvdr compatable - plus they are half the width of most DVD players. You can get them at Bowlers nr manchester or your local computer fair.
