The only 7 string i've played was the Ibanez Gem.
Nice to play as expected from a decent Ibanez. The guy who owned it had it set up quite nicely. Unfotunately the sound was just like any other Ibanez too. Sounded fine through a little practice amp with an effects pedal but plug it into a 4x12 and it sounded like a 90 quid strat copy... No bottom end rumble or mid range bite...Only up side to the sound was excellent treble and sustain (Ideal if you're brother like Vai/Satriani/Malmsteen etc).
To be honest... the 7 string is just a gimmick and isn't worth the extra cost. Better of getting him a good Gibson/Jackson/Dean or BC Rich 6 string if he likes rock guitar sounds. For anything else any Fender would do fine.
Depends how much money you want to part with. Avoid copies though... stick to the brand names even if it means buying second hand. (guitars are probably the only thing where i'd pay extra money for a brand name)

It's been a long time since i've worked with guitars, but 7 strings....
Okay, the only manufactor which springs to mind is the Ibanez. The range was called Jem and consisted of 666 (6 string) & 777 (7 string) models. Designed and endorsed by Steve Vai they featured DiMazio's finest and scalloped necks upwards of the 17th fret. were the mutts when introduced! (about 10 years back if memory serves.) The Passion and Warfare signiture also had multi coloured finish.
Must confess, i've sorta grown away from guitars since all my gear was nicked! (*******S!!!!!)
Ther may be more peeps making them now, but do you really need to go down to a low 'B'?

If he's into his rock and does machine head type music, a seven string guitar will only save him having to down tune his e string to D. Other than that, i don't get the point of having 7 strings
At leaset he's having a go.......ROCK ON

The Ibanez has an extra "high" A string if i remember. Dont know how much of a difference it'd make restringing it with a low B.
Going by his tastes in music he'd definitely be better off with a Dean/Jackson or BC Rich (or possibly a gibson SG). They sound far heavier than most, easily handle a very low action and almost all come with active EMG pickups for that extra bass rumble and feedback. If he looks at most of the heavier sounding bands he'll notice that most use the aforementioned guitars.
Marty (BC Rich player hence very biased).

The Ibanez is the only 7-string I've heard of and the novelty of pick ups that let you play without using your right hand never wore off for me but you could spend a lot of money on one of them then find out he is a Les Paul fan. You really do have to just ask him or his friends what ax he wants.
While we are on the topic what guitars does every one have me Les paul standard anniversary edition

You guitarists and your effects racks - (I'm only jealous!)
For what it's worth, from bands that I've played with the best sound I've heard has come from Washburn guitars. My last guitarist (session/pro) also thought that 7-string guitars were a bit of a gimmic (what he could do with 6-strings was pretty incredible)but he also rated Ibanez pretty highly. It all depends really on type of music that's gonna be played.
DP. (who needs amplification! hehe )
