Having read several of the rock threads and the guitarist thread, we clearly have a number of enthusiasts here.
I've long wanted an Ibanez electric guitar, and I wonder if anyone has any experience of them.
My standard of playing is pretty poor. This is my fault not my current guitar's fault! (Even so, a nice new guitar will hopefully renew my enthusiasm )
Some pointers:-
- The guitar will be mostly for home use.
- Rock/metal is my thing, but I'd like a guitar to suit a wide range of playing ie nothing too specialised.
- I want to pay no more than £600 - £700
- Ibanez is the make I'm really after, but I'm open to suggestions.
- I currently plick around on an old Westone Spectrum.
Thanks
Rich

IMO they're nice.. Good tones and rich sound. I had one for a while but sold it when I went to Uni and needed the funds. Bought a cheap Squier to have something to play and blew the £500 difference mostly on nights in the Student Union bar.. Go figure.
Would I have another? Probably, but my standard of playing probably wouldn't justify the expense. There are better around, obviously, but mine was metallic purple and very cool and I thrashed it like a rock monster for hours.
Have fun whatever you choose mate.

Thanks mate
Ended up buying an RG550 2002 model in black with a maple neck.
Probably paid too much for it, but it's great
Spent most of the weekend strumming and doodling on my new guitar - I'm not a great player, but as soon as I picked it up it somehow just felt right.
Well, anyway, I'm happy...
Cheers

Nice on Rich
The way it feels it prolly the most important thing
Where did you get it from? did you check out sound control on St Mary's street? I used to go in there at lunch times, just cause I felt like having a jam

Ibanez are great for improving your playing. They have a very nice feel and are very easy to get your fingers round. As much as i dislike them myself it sounds like it'd be ideal for you. (just don't get a 7 string... it's a waste of time)
Just to throw in a few other options though, how about Jackson or BC Rich. Both are easy to play, have a powerful sound, excellent quality, available in various styles from strat to some pretty outlanding pointy things. BC Rich being my own personal preference (now on my 3rd, 1 Eagle, 1 Wave, 1 Warlock).

Cheers for the advice marty , but I've already bought the Ibanez (see above) so not planning on buying another for a while
Jackson and BC Rich are certainly others I'd consider next time round, but I'd probably stick with the traditional Stat shape - not really into these pointy jobs!
Hey Crush
I went to Rikkis Music Shop on Leith Walk.
The main reasons being, that I got a good deal from them when I bough my first guitar 14 years ago (I remember stuff like that) and they had a model I really liked in stock.
Might have to recruit you for some lessons at some point...

Cool, no probs
I'm trying to change my style at the moment. Mainly to get away from the blues & into a country influence
I've learnt part of a scale, so it's a start

Scales
I can't remember the name of the ones i'm learning. But they're in the guitarist thread (page 3)
Also guitartabs.cc to learn other bands stuff. But that's how I got my style which I now hate.
Have you learnt how to head bang yet?

It's really worth having the guitar properly set up. My brother brought a Ibanez guitar and I thought it was ok but not great. He took it two a guy that specialises in reapirs and set ups and paid £40 for a set up and fret dress.
It was like a different guitar. So much nicer to play and easier. By having a full set up done it turned from being a OK, average guitar into a great instrument worth every penny paid for it.
DO IT! Best £40 you'll spend.

Hi Mark
Do all new guitars require setting up or are some good-to-go straight from the shelf?
My new one seems fine to me. Plays nicely (well it would do if I could actually play!) action seems good (if very slightly higher than I'm used to, but I'm not worried about that) stays in tune, even with severe action on the tremolo, no (or very little) fret buzz and does not appear to have any intonation problems.
Just wondering...

Sounds ok from the way you've just described it. As long as it's comfortable. That's the main thing.
For instance. I have a Fender Strat - Californian Series, and it feels fookin horrible. I even took it to Sound Control to have it set up again, but it still felt horrible and they put different strings on it than the ones I asked for
Then I played a guitar worth 40 quid which felt much better. It was more enjoyable to play
If it aint broke, don't fix it

Having a decent setup can make your guitasr easier to play if performed correctly. I gig regularly and always get my basses setup by a pro. In fact I also had my Tele set up recently and the differnce in playability was incredible.

Okay, appreciate the advice guys
Like I said, I don't think it's at all bad as it is, but then maybe a proffesional would disagree.
Only one way to find out! - I'll look into it...
Cheers
