Question

My son is learning guitar at the moment, already has an acoustic guitar but is looking for an electric (lead)guitar and amp. Looking in Ebay I can find a few starter kits with practice amp for 100-150 pound but I've also come across the below which to my untrained eye looks better than these starter kits. Any comments welcome.

Thumbs up

I did the same for my son, now 16, when he was 13. Best thing I ever did for him and he is now a really into guitar. First buy was a second hand electric with small amp. Now uses Fender USA Strat' with 250 watt Marshalls. I have just shown him your link and he thought that was a good deal - obviously you take a chance with final condition of kit. Suggest a gig bag to keep guitar in good shape and store accessories. About £20 for bag. Look up stringsdirect on net for strings etc. Note most guitar shops have a selection of used stuff. All you will need is the soundproofing!! Good luck. David

Thanks David, I thought the 40 watt amp might be a bit much but it'll be a bit like a practice one alongside your 250 watt

They can be turned down!! The 250 at wide open throttle as you scooby boys say would wake up the village! The 40 watt should be fine behind a closed bedroom door. David

I've just started learning too - using my mate's Casio Midi gtr (based on Fender Strat - bl00dy good gtr!!!)

The hardest thing is where to put your fingers

I'm learning bit by bit, and am recording my "attempts" into the Mac - it's amazing what you can do with a studio's worth of kit!!!

I will be buying my own guitar, but the lesson I've learnt is to buy a decent guitar ASAP - better quality, better action, nicer sound etc.....

Looking at a Telecaster.....

I am thinking of flogging my Westone Pantera X300(Strat type) and Peavey practice amp. I just don't use it and its a shame to just have it sat there (I prefer my Acoustic). It is a much better quality Guitar than the bargain basement stuff being sold new)

most guitar shops will put a package together for you if you ask, and most are keen to get new customers. One of the best online is regentguitars.co.uk - or something like that.

I'd also consider a few extras as well (maybe not at first, but soon after) as it's easy to get bored when you quickly figure out that you're not in fact Slash or Clapton, and your fingers hurt and appear to have a mind of their own

Magazines are good, as they always have backing tracks and CD's - but something like a Zoom 505 multi effects pedal will keep a player amused for a ages. You should be able to pick up a s/h one of these for £20 or so.

Harmony central has a few writeups on it. I haven't given it much thought to be honest. My Neighbour is a guitar teacher, so I'll ask him what its worth.

Hi

I would look at a Yamaha Pacifica for a first guitar, they are a Fender Strat style guitar so they are comfortable to hold and set up properly by your music shop they make a great guitar, depending on your budget I would get a small practise amp and something like a Korg Pandora PX4. The Pandora PX4 gives you lots of different sounds, built in tuner and metronome, you can connect headphones to it to practise without disturbing anybody else or connect it to your amp as a very usefull effects device (even makes my cheap Gorilla practise amp at work sound good).

Good luck
Darren

PS you might find Boots foam earplugs very usefull for the next few months .

i started on a crappy starter squire strat, but very quickly moved upto my shiny limited edition les paul which is much nicer to play.

a tip..buy a 2nd hand trace elliot supertramp twin 100w amp and wait for it to die (shouldnt take long as that model has a faulty transister which is known about) then take it back and it should get replaced all inside with new parts thats what i did n its a lovely amp tho dunno what ya budget is as they're £250 ish 2nd hand
