just been to my local phone shop who said because of the new legislation coming in over the next few months regarding stolen mobile phone details now being shared across all networks, ALL mobile that have been reported stolen will be cut off for good!

this will include lost and insurance scammed phones too and will also include all previously reported phones over the last year or so.

the guy also said that they will not be able to unlock them and they all will become useless!

i am currently using a phone my mate did an insurance claim on

Serves you right for handling 'stolen goods'

I doubt if what this sales assistant has said is true, but I hope that it is. This really is a simple solution to a very widespread problem. If stolen/scammed phones cannot be used then who's going to bother mugging children in the street for them in the first place.

Then again there's probably some human rights issue there to protect the crooks' ability to phone their buddies.

Cheers

This is not strictly true, not all networks currently have the ability to identify and switch off individual handsets.

Good. Then scummers like you won't be able to rip off the poor sods amongst us who aren't theiving barstewards.

I wouldn't be complaining at all if mobile phone insurance cost half what it does now....

If the phone was replaced, but actually was working fine and not lost, then it was stolen from the insurance company.

It's theft whichever way you look at it. Sorry!

Couldn't agree more Mark.

You're fleecing the insurance company, which whilst an easy target just means the rest of us pay higher premiums cos of dishonest people mading FRAUDULENT claims.

How do they cut off the phone? Is it not the SIM they can stop or is it something to do with the IMEI number?

Which networks currently do this?

It's the IMEI number which is broadcast when you make a call. I think all networks do it now. Basically, if a phone has a banned number, it just won't connect.

Ask peccy. He'll tell you what the precise effect is of a banned IMEI number later this week.

If this clampdown is not worldwide then the phones can still be sold abroad.

Also the IMEI number can be changed in most phones.

It makes me so mad that just because people steel things without using a gun they think it's ok. Insurance fraud is like a bloody tax on the rest of us in terms of increased premiums

Your phone will not be barred/banned/cut off at all.

As long as you are making calls, the vendor is making money.
Unless you have a high end mobile, the one you are using is probably given free with a tank of Optimax.

The only phones I have witnessed being cut off are ones where the bill is not paid.

Maybe I can shed a bit of light on this. By the way, I would like to state upfront that all the mobiles I deal in are 100% legit and purchased from company contracts etc.

Talking to the people that I know who do this, the IMEI number can still be changed, it is simple and straight forward to do, as long as you know what you are doing. The usual trick is to change the last two digits of the code. This as far as I know still work no prob.
