Smile Replacing original stereo / speakers

Hi,

Got my new 4dr WRX in silver yesterday after 2 months of hell with a MINI Cooper S.

The WRX is just awesome...........except for the stereo !!

Can anyone reccommend a good replacement or is it just the speakers? Do you have to buy an adaptor for the dash cos its a different size.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance !!

Put your post in the 'ICE' section or try talk audio forums, they will help you along.
I have a MY00,classic so don't really know what fits you car, but there been plenty of people who have replaced there OEM speakers/head unit.

PS What was wrong with the MINI, was it a new BMW type?Just interested thats all.

Thanks, i'll have a look.

Where do I start with the MINI ??

Boot full of water.
Unable to get in boot due to failed catch.
New steering colomm needed.
Persistant poor running.
Faulty fuel guage.
Sat Nav failed.

Not bad for a £20K car small car !

The courtesy car they lent me is stuck on my drive and will not start, they are coming for it on tuesday.

Have a look at www.mini2.com for more info, I am not alone.

MINI - great car unfortunately made in the UK.

Yes I got my money back, and am looking forward to many miles of fun reliable motoring ( hopefully )

Cheers

A replacement will depend on your budget. Whatever you buy will be an improvement. Try to find a unit with MP3 playback - 10 hours of music on one CD

Tell us how much you have to spend on head unit, speackers etc and it will be easier to give a recommendation.

Yeah, I upgraded my MY96 on a relatively small budget for under £250 for the Kenwood CD/MP3 head unit and 4 Pioneer speakers. Sounds much better but I knew I was never going to be astounded by it.

If you want serious sounds and are looking at amped-up Infinitys and Focals like they all rave about on Scoobynet, then you could be looking at anything from £750 upwards, depending on how far you want to go.

I don't know how bugeye Imprezas compare to classics but, if you can fit 6x9 speakers in the rear shelf, then the Genesis 6x9 subs are apparently very good - not too expensive but you'd need a small amp.

If by 'a different size', you mean that the head unit is double-DIN (twice as high as a standard stereo), this shouldn't be a problem. You can normally fit a standard size single-DIN head unit and fill the gap with a range of things - a pocket, a blanking plate, a graphic equaliser, etc. If you mean that the new Imprezas have got a stereo that isn't a rectangular standard stereo shape and size, you should be able to get a fascia adaptor from Halfords, an ICE shop or probably even the Subaru dealer.

P.S. And, if you want a sub in the boot, then I hear that it will have to be pretty good and well-powered in order to get the sound from the boot, through the boot 'bulkhead' and the back seat.

Oh OK, I've just seen a picture of the MY03 head unit. You might want to take a look at this info that another Scoobynet member wrote when upgrading his setup:
