Will 6x9 rear speakers fit in the precut holes in the parcel shelf on a classic impreza, or has anyone done it ?

Not as a straight drop in, no, unless you're very lucky.

Your options are to cut out metal (NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!) or to make spacers to sit above the shelf, or hang 'em underneath the shelf.

The last option would be my preference...
