Drop in - Plug in Front speakers (99MY) ??
#1
What speakers simply screw into the existing mount and holes without modification or spacers ?
I tried Infinity 652's but no good. I simply want to unscrew and replace like I did by adding Pioneers in the rear doors (wagon).
And - if you know who stocks them mail order ? Thanks

SJ's right, the Infinity 605CS's simply drop straight in. What I needed to do on my MY99 RB5 was re-use the plastic collar from the OEM speakers. You screw the 605CS's to their own brass collars and then screw the speaker/collar to the plastic OEM spacers. You can't screw the speaker directly to the plastic spacer as the screw holes don't line-up; plus I don't think it would be spaced enough to clear the window glass.
They're a doddle to fit, the biggest headache with any component speaker is having to re-run cables in the door, but you could always bodge the existing cables if you don't have an amp.

Edited to add that I bought mine from MCS Direct for £80. Couldn't find anyone cheaper.

You could do, but you'll get no response above the natural roll-off of the driver, which'll be around 7K. So it'll sound very flat...
If you just want to bolt one thing in and not bother with crossovers, etc, look for a good "coaxial" speaker.

Yes, if you only want sound out of the woofer
Don't you like high frequencies?
Maybe you'd be better with coaxial (right term?) speakers that have the woofer/tweeter in the one drive unit if you don't want the hassle.
To be honest it only takes slightly longer to suss out where to stick the crossover (I stuck mine in the space behind the arm rest at the back of each door) and to run cable up to the tweeter (I screwed mine to the plastic trim behind the wing mirrors.

As you probably guessed I have absolutely no idea when it comes to ICE other than having a half decent head unit (Blaupunkt San Fran).
As usual, Half***s were not very helpful on matching speakers to cars. With their advice (after saying I didn't want to make MDF mounts /spacers etc) I ended up with coaxial Infinity's which were too deep and wouldn't fit the plastic OEM mounting.
I'll try another couple of places, but if you know of a coaxial speaker than DOES bolt straight in (!) and sounds better than the std 35W ones, I'm all ears ! Thanks

To answer my own thread (might be useful to other novices)
Kicker EX62 coaxials fit exactly in the OEM housings. The only think you have to do is cut the plastic guide lugs off the housings.
Probably nowhere near as good as Infinity or JBL but still a darn sight better than the standard ones IMHO.
