ok, so managed to lock out alarm immobilser. spark reckons m30 box and fob are knackered. so managed to source a couple of m30s
how important is it that serial numbers match.
correct me if i'm wrong, but m30 is cat 1, all plugs/sockets match, only thing different are fobs and serial number. will this plug straight in and work or not ?

I have a M30 fitted to my 99MY UK turbo.
AFAIK it is a UK fitted system, not OEM Subaru (which the transponder in the ignition key is).
If the key fobs are already matched to the ECU then you are good to go.
If not, then you need the original 4 digit PIN code for the ECU.
I have a pdf copy of the manual if you want it.
PS My ECU failed for a dry solder joint on the high current terminal of the fuel pump circuit cut-out relay. Easy enough to fix but a **** design! perhaps you should open yours up and check if it can be repaired?

What I am trying to say is that the M30 is really an "aftermarket" fitment, so it doesn't have clever stuff like encrypted communications with the engine management unit.
To replace the alarm ECU you will need to a) find it, and b) break into the metal box!
When you said you had already managed to source a couple of M30s, I assumed that you already had them in your hands?

No what I meant was my spark has removed the failed M30 unit. Fob has also failed
I have spoken to other forum users who have available a used m30 unit with working fobs and PIN code. Only thing different is serial number on alarm control box. I'm hoping its just a case of fitting the replacement alarm ecu. It should already be linked to the fobs that come with it and the pin code will allow me to reprogrammed the key pad .
No ?

You need the PIN code to allow you to match new keyfobs.
If it already comes as a matched set you are good.
Can your "spark" (I do hope he calls you his "punt") not fix the old ECU then?

He hasn't opened it and tried to fix it. Just traced the fault back to it. Says my only fob is also faulty and I don't have the pin code for it.
