Get a BLACK Subaru filter, or a Pink Subaru filter.
Oil is a debate in itself.
Proceedure is.
Warm engine, and let cool a bit.
Drain the oil, and remove the filter.
Fill the filter with oil, new washer on the sump plug, and tighten up.
Fill oil to half way on stick.
Remove the crank or cam sensor connector.
Crank over on the key till the oil light goes off.
Replace crank/cam sensor, and top oil up to half way.
Start engine and get to temp, and then top up to the upper mark on the dipstick.
That is how I have done mine and was told how to do it, which works.

I was always told to stick to a minimum of 10w as the cold weight.
If you find engine wont prime with oil pressure when cranking, loosen the oil filter until oil comes out of it, then tighten - can be an issue with some of he scooby filters.
And make sure filter is full of oil and there is oil on the filter seal too

I changed the oil on my 98 wrx yesterday and used a black genuine filter with millers 10w40 competition oil. Followed the procedure as above and it has never sounded so quiet.

Interesting, I understand and have been following the whole process for quite a while, but why the half fill/up to pressure/complete fill steps?
