rebuild or new
well the bottom end has started to knock so looks like the engine is coming out but i dont know if i should buy a newage engine or just rebuild the current engine.
looking to go to around the 400bhp mark in the future so was thinking just build up to that.i have no idea if i have a closed deck block of anything.i am rather new to Subaru's

Hi there
We are run 2.1L Open Deck Block at 490bhp without the problem,if its correctly build and with right parts I would say can be good choice
But depends on your budget,if its budget on 2.1 stroker conversion,I would go with 2.1
If budget is tight New age STi 2.0L will/can be good choice, but depends from who you are buying and how has been treated etc.

I'm in the exact same position mate and after a lot of phoning around and picking brains I would say that if your wanting 400bhp then the 2.5l build will be best suited due to the similar torque figures and less lag, but I'm no engine builder or tuner so can't really say any more.

Newage jdm short motor, you won't go far wrong at that level IMO, would go for that over a standard 2.5 block as you can hear some right horror stories if they ain't been forged and tend to suffer more probs than the 2.0 uk or jdm motors from the newage cars, we are running all versions of them engines in our cars all in standard trim and when we went to have the RB320 mapped we was told not to crank it up past 380 or we would more than likely run in to problems, where as my jdm motor is 453/446 on stock motor and loves it looking to get a meth map shortly as well

I had a similar issue last year and opted for a 2.5l fully forged as i wanted a road car, 2.5l with 6speed will make a great road car and no lag.
Im still saving for 6 speed so i can push for more power, but as it is at 370/390 feels great to drive.
400hp also can be done with newage bottom end without any hassle as many people run more then 400hp on newage block.

Newage STI yes, newage WRX no, just to clarify :-) Drop me a pm if you want to discuss some options, depending on your budget I have a few things here as a few Customers have PX'd some short engines for upgrades, ive got a 2.1 stroker open deck with Wossner pistons, Hawkeye crank and rods with new bearings and oil pump for £1600
