Default Which intercooler?

Hi all, I'm planning a lot of things for my 98 Impreza WRX during the winter.

Hopefully one of them will be an engine build, been speaking to API about this.

Now im currently running 300BHP with decat, panel filter, walbro pump, 440's and the VF22, I'm only aiming for around 330 ish bhp once rebuilt and am just wondering which intercooler i should use to achieve this sort of power?

newage STI or just upgrade to the version 4 STI one?

Any advice would be great

Trying to source parts now rather than at the last minute.

Might start a project thread sometime as well.

Steve

FMIC would be ideal and future proof the project, but an new age sti would do the job fine too.

Yeah I considered a FMIC but I don't personally want to go that way, I want the car to stay relatively original, and I'm not planning on going for big power in future as I don't want to go the 6 speed route.

What sort of money do you know would a good newage top mount be, guessing I'd need the undertray as well?

And how difficult are they to fit?

A newage wrx intercooler would cope fine with that power and is easier to fit as it is not as wide as the newage sti intercooler, cheap to get hold of aswell.

Ok thanks for that, what is the most power the newage WRX one will take then? I don't want to be right on the limit of it else?

Thanks, Steve

Thanks for the links, very helpful

Only thing is mine being a 98 effectively version 4 i don't have the dumpvalve fitted to the intercooler like the newage ones, what kind of mods does that require?

I'm not personally a fan of the FMIC look, each to there own i guess and i don't see the point in it as I'm not going for big power really but thanks anyway

Just use the std dump valve that is bolted to the TMIC and it should jury plumb in.

Look for the matching tray that goes under the bonnet scoop also, you want to make sure that it's directing air over the whole surface of the intercooler, and not letting air pass to the sides. If you use a smaller tray that only directs the air over the middle portion of the intercooler you're losing much of the benefit of the larger intercooler.

I've got a hawk eye WRX intercooler and tray, yours for the price of postage if you're interested, or free if you pick it up from me in Cheltenham. Not sure if the tray fits in your scoop, may need modifying at least; and the Y pipe is probably going to be the wrong size; but for free it's probably worth a bash. PM me if you're interested.

Thanks for the offer mate really kind of you, but looking at the pics i've seen on ebay of hawk WRX ones they look a lot smaller and totally different shape, or is this not the case i may be looking at a different thing..?

Do you know what sort of power a hawk is capable of?

It's smaller than the new age STi intercooler, but bigger than the classics I think. The shape of the hawk eye TMICs is the same as previous generations, it's with the 08+ models that they went to a square.

Andy Forest suggests changing the WRX top mount to an STi one for stages of tune from 360bhp+, rates it okay for up to 350:

Cheers for the pics and your help mate
But i think i'm going to go for a newage bug/blob WRX one instead of the hawkeye one, i may be wrong but the newage ones seem to have a bigger surface area than the hawk?
