hey folks, started a thread about gettin either a wrx or sti and hit a problem. wrx should run fine on 95 ron but sti will need 97-99. the only thing i can get local is 95. i did a google search and discovered you can mix 95 with 10-20% methanol and it will give a ron value of 99 or higher. i would need the car remapped to suit but this would allow me to have an uk sti.
i just wanted to hear from anyone one here who uses this method or has mapped a car running like this, ive heard cars usualy make 10% more power and zero det.
i wonder if its worth the risk, if you get it on your skin it burns and if you get it in your eye you can go blind...is it worth the risk to get a sti over a wrx?
i have a shed away from my house that i would keep the 205l drum in, i would then fill the tank at my local fuel station and then add the jerry can of methenol, if they have a problem with this i could crawl home with the car off boost and then add the methenol.
is it worth all the hasstle?

You thought of getting it mapped to run on 95?

Would be cheaper and more reliable...

yeh thought about it, dont know how much power i would loose and dont know how well an sti would run on 95 even if mapped. any idea how much its likely to cost to get an sti remapped, preferably in scotland

Mixing Methanol increases octane but reduces the calorific value of the fuel, you then need more fuel to give the same lambda result. Just mixing the Meth will destroy the engine pretty quickly.

just get it mapped for 95.a decent mapper will be able to make the bhp loss quite small,even just a few bhp so worth doing it.

Tesco momentum is 99 RON, have you searched Tescos for your nearest?

As an example, as i have switchable maps, i have a 95 ron and a 99ron map.

99 made 440/410

95 with similar margins of safety made 410/390

If the percentages are proportional, expect your 280bhp to become 260bhp.

Using meths as an additive in 95 to become 99 is probably possible, but the mix would have to absolutely bang on every time, and with filling up more meths mix ontop of old meths mix over time etc ..... never going to happen!
