Default Wickes weird pricing.

I'm in need of a small amount of plaster, so I rang Wickes, as they used to do a patching plaster bag.

They still do, 5kg for £4.99.

Yet a full bag, 25kg, is only £5.69.

I think I'll wait and see if I can scrounge some. I only need enough to mix in a cake mixing bowl.

In situation like that, I go for the 25 kg one. I'll use what I need to, and store the rest to waste itself away, only to go the skip; eventually.

Very foolish, I know. But sometimes, you have to be foolish to be foolishly clever.

I still think that it's odd of Wickes to do such pricing. Perhaps the 25 kg is bog standard material.

I was just talking about it to someone from real life. They said you should by 25 kg and give the remaining unused plaster to someone who needs it.

Yes, ok, but where do you find that 'someone' , and it would cost you a fortune to post nearly 24 kg to anyone from the internet!

I think that's a stupid idea.

Personally, I suggest you Google the plaster and find the best deal for a very small amount. Other than that, Stevebt from here is a plasterer, isn't he? He can post you some for free, if you're nice to him. Try, anyway.

Alcazar, not being funny mate but based on your DIY history surely it would be cheaper to get a professional in to do the job?

You'd think so, wouldn't you?

Actually, some of you might be surprised at just what I HAVE achieved in the past.

The window in a stone wall in France being a case in point.
No scaffolding, only one ladder, only hammer and chisel to remove stones, only buckets to remove the mortar, all carried out by hand, cheap cement mixer, all cement carried into the bedroom by hand, rebar bent by hand, the whole job carried out by a little fat bloke of 63 and an even smaller lady of 59, neither of who had any training in the job whatsoever, and neither of whom is at all fit.
Yet the window fit perfectly into the created aperture and it all looks good.

And the only thing that went wrong? The instructions for wiring were @rse about face

Sounds like they want to encourage trade people who buy often & in bulk & sting the occasional DIYer.

You can't really blame them for that.

Yeah, knowing his DIY history, he could be looking for this sort of plaster on Google:

They're going quite cheap at Alibaba.com, and I think you can buy them loose, if you like.

Proper dilemma

Have you thought about using Polyfilla, as by the sounds of it you don't need much, might save you 50p.
