Default Whats going wrong? Oil and coolant level issue

2002 Bugeye WRX, standard apart from panel filter and cat-back exhaust. 6000 miles since last service. Always gets warmed up and down, I dont really hammer it very often. 3 weeks since I checked the levels, everything was fine.

Last week started with a puff of blue smoke on start up, goes quickly. On Thursday evening the EML flashed briefly under normal load. Friday checked OBD for codes, nothing there. Friday evening flashed EML briefly, again under normal load. Saturday morning checked the levels and the oil didnt even register on the dipstick and the coolant wasnt visible in the reserve tank. Topped both up to the correct levels. Have driven 200 miles since then, no further EML. Checked the levels this evening, engine had not been ran for 8 hours at that point. Oil is now 2 inches OVER maximum, coolant in the reserve tank has dropped by over an inch.

Throughout all this the engine has ran perfectly, it has never skipped a beat, no noises, no smells, no loss of power, no additional smoke.

Whats wrong? Head gasket? Valve stem oil seals?

If you checked the oil when the engine was hot then the dipstick will show low readings.

Also if you topped up the oil & now its showing alot more on the stick seems to me you did not check the oil level on a flat surface before hand?

Both times the oil was checked the car had been left to cool for a minimum of 8 hours, both times parked in the same spot on level ground

Hmm. It could be a number of things. Leaking injectors can also cause oil level to rise but as i said it can be a number of things. Hope you get it sorted.

Car has spent all day in the garage and they have the solution as to what is wrong with the car, absolutely nothing! They cant find any problems anywhere and cant understand it, apparently my description perfectly described a head gasket failure but a check of the car shows that this isnt the case. oh well..

thats the plan, have told them to do the oil and filter whilst it is there so that I know it is spot on, then will be monitoring it closely
