Welcome
Now why did you buy a car that has issues? and why did you not get it inspected
This may now cost you alot more cash than you were prepared to pay in the first place for a decent one....
Dont worry too much, your not the first to do this and probably not the last either, but when buying a car that has expensive parts (and trust me they really can end up costing you a packet), its good to get advice and take your time and not jump into it!

Having come from a Saab I think parts are quite reasonable on Subaru's.
I have a newage WRX and it was a pain to start until I realised you have to let the fuel pump prime itself before starting up, almost like waiting for a Diesel and then it starts perfectly so maybe try that.
I too have this lumpy idle and was advised it could be a Neutral Position Switch if that's relevant to your car. I have one but am yet to fit it so I hope that could solve it.
Like you I'm new to these and still learning.
