Default Ignition and lock change

Hi, chaps, I only have 1 key for my WRX and its the ignition key. H have now bought another lock set 2nd hand. Can the ignition barrel be changed using the old key. I expect the door and boot wont be a problem.

Any one changed their locks.

I had change the locks on my 200sx. The doors and boot should just unbolt. The ignition had 2 security bolts that have rounded caps so they cant just be undone by a thief. It can be undone but would prob have to drill them out. I assume it will be pretty much the same set up for all cars.

hope that helps

AFAIK, you can.

Removing door locks is actually harder: needs door cards off, door handle off, linkages disconnected, then there is a flat springy plate behind the lock, which force fits into a groove in the lock barrel. It has a slight upturn at one end, just enough to get a screwdriver blade in and start it moving, then a pair of pliers and out it comes, the lock barrel falls out in your hand.

Cheers, the new set of lock are somewhere in my untidy garage, going to do the job very soon, just wanted to confirm so I can get enough time to finish the job.

Try a search or two on here, I'm SURE I've seen a thread about changing the ignition barrel

Just completed the Ignition and and Door lock change, so i thought I would report back, after all whats the use of a thread if it dose not have a conclusion.

The ignition barrel can be changed by Putting the old key in and turning to the first position and then pushing a small round recessed pin in the front of the aluminum casting. The pin is facing the driver. Its very hard to access and removal of the steering wheel is recommended, i however could not get my wheel off, so used a small, maybe 2mm allen key the smaller end at 90 Deg to exert enough pressure on the pin to eject the barrel. Also noted that my mock were all interchangeable, except the Boot, the boot lever that excepts the rod has a slightly larger, hole on mine, I was going to drill it out 0.5mm, but instead removed the cir-clip and fitted my old one to the new lock.

All went well, but the car dose not start then I remembered I have taken my ECU out .... All done, even tightened up the loose passenger side mirror, and replaced the rear lenses !

It was a 1993 Jap Spec, but I would imagine there wont be much difference. Most car manufactures use this method to change the barrel.
