To be equally blunt, there are tappets, 16 of them. There are no rocker arms but tappets exist in OHC engines. See here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tappet
To the O/P, I believe Subaru (like most other modern engines) use hydraulic tappets or cam followers. These use engine oil pressure to take up the valve clearance. Hopefully someone will point you in the right direction for your problem as my car has just developed a noise fron the LH valve area.

Deep breath,
Version 1~2 WRX has Hydraulic Lifters.
Version 2 STi has Lightweight Hydraulic Lifters.
Version 2 RA has 'top hat' under bucket shims.
Version 3~6 WRX has outer shim buckets.
Version 3~6 STi has under bucket shims.
Version 7 WRX/STi onwards have Selective buckets.
The hydraulic lifters do get clogged up with tarnish/debris over time, so the only cure if they are noisy is to remove them, strip and clean or replace if worn.
Pic of a stripped down lifter below,

Unusual for the inner shim type to be noisy,as the clearances tend to get smaller due to valve seat recession especially on the exhaust side.
As suggested above, could be noisy injectors or loose spark plugs, slight exhaust gas leak etc etc.

tbh the ej2o motor is quite noisey in general, just listen to that ken block subaru post on here and you'll hear that from cold start making a noise and even some piston slap[forged],and the injectors are quite loud yes on them all some more than others.
lol that reminds me when the big end failed - catastrophically! - on my 205 GTI 1.9... The conrod ended up on top of the alternator!!! I couldn't quite believe it!

he is a super man of knowledge

), then it would appear it has outer shim buckets(?). Is that right Mick, or am I talking the proverbials?
