Sorry mate, i think you have misunderstood what i am after! I don't need the intercooler, i am after a splitter that sits inside the scoop to direct air flow to the front of the IC!!

I have the Zero Sports splitter on my STi 5 (put on by a previous owner). I assume it works better than the OEM one...??? Who knows?

Indeed! I think that i will just make my own from the IWOC template and see what happens. Can't do any harm!

Well it could! i.e. if it didn't actually direct bugger all air over and through the core!

Lol, it just sits in the middle of the scoop doesn't it? Sends air to the the front of the IC as well as the back?

Yeah, that's right.

Lets just hope the IWOC one has been designed properly and works efficiently...

Intercooler splitters are a surprisingly effective modification. I have some with/without charge temp data from years ago somewhere and was very surprised at the difference. If I encounter the numbers anywhere I'll dig them out.

As per the other related thread, Subaru started incorporating splitters as standard from MY03 onwards so even they acknowledge that they work.

"This resulted in a further 3 degree C drop in temperature difference from input to output intercooler temperature"

3 degrees..... woohoo! Seeing as there is a sheet of aluminium sat in the garage doing nothing and i have had a few Stellas i might go and have a go with the snips!

Yeah the logic behind the dual split is sound.

Laminer airflow always wanting to take path of least resistance - hence wanting to be forced to the rear, due to the forward motion of the ve-hi-cle

Pointless tat, IMHO

It has high pressure going in the scoop and a lower pressure underneath all the core will get used......

Eh? High pressure in = lower pressure under core getting used????

Surely you are taking the same entry pressure and spreading it more evenly over the entire core rather than creating one very cool bit at the back where the charge enters the IC, thereby increasing the coolness of the whole core and not just one portion of it?

No what 172 means is that there's high pressure on top of the core (as air is forced through a small opening with no way to escape but through the IC core's top surface. Plus there's a low pressure area occuring at base of core on underside (as it's open). High pressure airflow always wants to move to a low pressure area in an attempt to try to equalise...

I thought that, but tested it just to be sure. Figures were surprising.

That's true. However, practical experience suggests that the core gets used more equally/efficiently if a proportion of the inrush is forced to the front half rather than left to do its own thing. Implication would be that without the splitter, pressure is higher at the back than at the front.

As above, Subaru did it themselves, and they'd hardly involve themselves in greater component cost if it made no difference.

Where would you position the splitter, in the middle of the undertray?

Well in the harsh light of day it looks quite good, although i can't try it on the car as it is not here. It looks like it will sit abour 3/8 of the way up the scoop and pull air in to the front. Here is the design blueprint but i have modded mine to ensure that there are no gaps at the side

So long as it 'seals' over the edges of the IC and that the split is at least halfway towards the front of the IC with a downwards-facing air 'deflecting plate', then it should theoretically work fine IMO...

I assume you'd sobered up a bit before tackling a bit of Autocad?
