Default fuel pump issues

I have a my98 uk 2000, i have just removed the engine to fit another clucth and bearing so am checking the engine whilst its out, the engine did have a slight miss fire\ hesitation also, one thing what i was baffeld about was though, i removed the engine, and pushed the car out of the garage to work on, i realissed that i had left a window open so connected the battery to which fuel came firing out everywhere!! Is this correct? i thought that the fuel pump only primed once or twice and stopped? this one keeps on firing fuel constantly? i just thought this was strange as every time i started the car i could smell fuel and thought it may be over fueling? can someone shed some light on this for me please, out of interest the pump is a walboro 255 with the standard fuel pump filter attached.

I think it will keep firing fuel out until it has reached a set pressure with all the pipes off it will keep priming as it will not have any resistance.

no mate it shouldnt keep firing out like that,it on atimed relay not pressure so something is amis there fella could also be the reason for your mis/hesitation as it sounds like she could over fueling

just rewire it to a wire under the dash that only becomes live when the ignition is on (most probably a yellow wire) then it would only come on when you turn the key

or you can just get one of those cool switches with the safety cover and just wire the pump up through that.
providing you remember to turn it off when finished with it to avoid battery drain and fuel forced through the engine. not only would it look cool it could be seen as a safety feature

It's very difficult to work out what's going on from the description here. The fuel pump is supposed to pressurise the rail every time you turn the ignition on - so it's not at all surprising to hear it squirting fuel into your engine bay when you tried to shut the window.

However, the pump should shut off after a second and a half. Is that what happened or did it keep running? If it did, without seeing the car and knowing what sort of state of disassembly at the moment, it's impossible to know what the cause is. Has the car had any electrical work done to it, either by yourself or a previous owner? Has, for example, the pump relay been replaced or augmented with a manual override?

If, looking at your later posts, it runs whenever the battery is connected, then surely you would have noticed this prior to now? Aside from that you'd hear it constantly whirring away, it would have flattened your battery and/or killed the pump.

As such, if this wasn't happening before, it seems that whatever is causing the pump to run constantly is something that's happened while you've had the car in pieces. It's clearly not possible for us to know what you've done - but weren't you posting the other day about neutral position switch and speed sensor problems? If so, sounds like you have a few electrical issues to deal with. Having your car looked at by someone who knows what they're seeing probably wouldn't be a bad idea, there's very little we can do from here.
