Default Any guides on engine removal??

Am picking up a new engine tomorrow for my Scoob, and having never done anything on an Impreza before I was wondering are there any guides for removal or fitting??

I`m a pretty competent mechanic, but have never done anything on the Scoob as yet.

Any help, pointers, tips, will be greatly appreciated.

i just took mine out. so will try give you a run down.

intercooler off. radiator out, air con pump removed and moved to side. same for power steering pump. downpipe off. starter motor out, bell housing bolts out. place a jack under the bellhousing to support gear box. undo 2 14mm nuts on the subframe engine mounts and lift out! should be almost everything in that

ah. missed an important point there. ooops

when you take off the starter motor you will see a plug with allenkey hole. take that out and then you will need a bolt. preferrable something you removed from the inlet cover, this then will screw into the pin which is located in that hole. pull on it and then lift the clutch fork up. you will see what i mean when you come to do it

If the engine has not been split from the box before then the alignment dowels may be stuck fast. One of mine stuck so hard that I was convinced I had not undone some bolts. Took a lot of ***** and a six foot crowbar to (eventually) seperate the engine from the box. Went with such a bang that I was convinced the bell housing had cracked. Little bit of copper slip on reassembly will prevent future problems.

Other common problem is the unusual pull type clutch. Remove the clutch actuator hinge pin as described above.

When removing the air con compressor there is no need to disconnect the pipework and lose the expensive gas. Unbolt the compressor fom the engine and swing it over to sit in the space vacated by the battery. The alternator may be positioned next to the air con compressor without disconnecting. Similarly the power steering pump and cooling pipe will fit in the air filter base behind the abs unit.

Last tip, No need to remove the bonnet. The engine is not tall so swings out easy.

Feel free to ask if you get stuck but the Impreza engine is remarkably easy to remove and refit so you shouldn't have a problem.

Good Luck

I found the manuals very poor for info but as stated above the clutch fork assembly is the only thing that is out of the ordinary everthing thing else is very straight forward.

just a thought if your removing the engine with the gear box attached, the inner drive shafts are retained using roll pins, these need knocking out before the driveshaft UJs will slide off.

no need to touch drive shafts when just removing, refitting engine.only thing you need to do with gearbox when refitting new engine is jack it up an inch or so to aid the engine into place, then once you have the engine attached to the box lower the box and engine down till the engine mounts lower into there holes.

it's probably your carbon can, it filters vented fuel vapour as part of the emissions control system, I can't see the point of having it fitted and not connected either re connect it or bin the lot, most people simply remove it.

They're are plenty of posts about this and it's pretty easy to remove. You'll end up with a choice of whether to re-route the main vent pipe into the N/S inner wing or block it up and drill a hole in the fuel cap. I prefer venting into the inner wing area.

any weight saving is good , but as you say it doesn't weigh much so it's not going to make much difference and you won't get the wiff of fuel I sometimes get on startup.

Right apart from the clutch fork, is there any special way of putting the coolant in, or oil??

Will be fitting a new oil sump plug one of them magnetic ones, also new oil filter, and aux belt.

Just wanna know if theres any special way of doing things.

some ppl say to fill the coolant through the turbo hose. but if you fill it slow enough and get the air out of the system properly then you should be fine.

with the oil you want to disconnet the crank sensor and turn the car over before just starting it. this will help get the oil around the block

i removed an engine from v5 turbo in 45 mins,

if i didnt have to swap over turbo, plugs, clutch from old engine and remove aircon pump from new unit, would have done it in under 3 hours and running again
