Default A question from a noob after my first track sessions today

During my sessions I wasnt taking it particularly hard as im new to tracking my car, but ofcourse it was being given alot more abuse than I would care to give it on the road!

I was only really having one problem, after coming out of the corners and full boost to around 4000rpm and I would get backfiring for three or four seconds with no power then back onto full boost by the end of the straight which was useless!

All I can think of is that my fuel was getting lower and lower as the session went on, towards the end of the second session I was down to the E mark on the fuel gauge.

Could the car have been starved of fuel so spluttering untill the fuel had settled in the tank to be picked up by the pump again?

The car drove fine on the way home from the track. My modifications are k&n panel filter and full 3" decat on an S reg turbo 2000

Its called fuel starvation and classics are reknown for it on less than half a tank of fuel, its also not a heathy thing to do as it can cause detonation

Thanks for the reply Tony, how can I get around this problem as it was costing me alot of time on the track!

Can I just buy a walbro and put that in? or is it a case of take as much fuel as possible with me? I wanted to stay under half a tank of fuel to shed some weight!

Swirl pot is almost a necessity on track, mine does it below 1/4 of a tank (New-Age).

IMHO

A walbro sits in the same location, so not much difference when it come to fuel surge. Best way is to keep plenty of fuel in there. Ive altered mine and got pick ups in both sides of the tank which seems to have cured it.

The other option is to fit a small tank in the boot (swirl pot) and use the o/e pump as a lift pump to it then have an inline pump supplying fuel to the engine. I didnt want to goe this route as i do load the car now and again and i didnt want fuel in the boot

Thanks for all of the replies, I think im just going to have to stick with keeping her topped up with fuel. I will only be going on track rarely so its no major issue!

I dont like the idea on fuel in the boot either as it could lead to a whole host of problems without a firewall etc!

Just keep it topped up over 1/4 or even 1/2 (I tend to keep mine over half and bring a couple of jerry cans ful of VPower to make it easy to do). You're not racing so a few extra kgs aren't going to make a difference!

As soon as i dropped below 1/2 a tank I noticed the backfiring and loss of power. Il try to keep above 1/2 in future!

You make a good point about not actually racing, will keep that in mind!

Can be fitted under either the bonnet or the under boot floor....
