turbo boost question
what sort of rev range should the turbo start boosting on a classic sti.
mine dosent start picking up much until 4700-5000 rpm. is this about right.

Hell no that sounds f'ing late. What type/MY of car are you talking about? They vary a bit (STi 5/6 pick up earlier than their predecessors), but even then, most should be starting to spool in the mid to late 2krpm range and on full boost by 3500

Have you checked to see if the ECU has been altered? I once tested a prospective car which I had intended buying. It had a Gems ECU with the turbo boost range from 5,000rpm -7500rpm. It was full on, hard work and not a car to live with every day.

thats what i thought i would have expected it about start about 3000ish.
the car drives fine pulls well off booost but does seem to reving quite high when motoring along then hit about 4500rpm then boost gauge gets to the zero mark then when the turbo kicks in it takes off like a rocket, which is fun but as i said general driving the revs seem to be a bit on the high side in relevance to the speed of the car
dont know what ecu it is assumed its the standard one.
the car is a v3 my97

You know what assumption is, right?
First task with any new used car is to work out what you've got. Given what you know about the spool, it'd be well worthwhile having a good look at the ECU and the boost control area to see if there's anything bolted on (or plugged in) that might be affecting it.

Yes i do know what assumption is.
i dont dont what ecu should be on there, i can look at it but i wont know if it there orginal or not.
nothing looks untoward with the boost control soloniod or the surrounding area.

your car will start boosting at around 2,400rpm and in full boost by 3,200rpm.
i think you shoult check for a split vacume pipe or a loose conection as this would leak boost causing the car to boost later.
hope this helps David
